I cleaned off the area on my rear axle where the numbers are stamped. I found 2H G C007 1 What does this mean?

2H is the gear ratio code
G = Detroit Gear & Axle assembly plant.
C = ?
007 = Day of year made
1 = Day shift.

The "C" could be a ZERO or a 6 I guess. It is clear but faintly stamped. 2H is 3.23?

So the prefix "2HG" 2H is ratio? G is production plant.

I have 3 other rears 2 ea 3.42 posi (w/PBR disc)with the prefix "2PN". And one that is 3.23 posi (w/PBR disc) with the prefix "2PM". These rears must have been made at different plants?

From: out of my mind; be back in 5 minutes....
Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Checking here http://www.hioutput.com/tech/ratio.html I find the code 2HG as being a 1986 3.23 ratio open carrier (non-posi).

Since we've determined the proper code from the axle as 2HG C 007 1 we come up with

2HG = 1986 3.23 ratio open carrier
C = Buffalo assembly plant
007 = Day of year made
1 = Day shift

Thanx, a lot fellas. The 2HG rear in question was apart at sometime before I owned the car. It makes a howling noise that I attribute to improper assy by the previuos owner. Can I simply convert it to "posi" by changing the carrier, and make the noise go away at the same time?

Thanx,ANDYZ28
