T 5 rebuild 5th gear on main shaft is stuck

T 5 rebuild 5th gear on main shaft is stuck
I am in the process of taking my t5 apart. THe 5th gear driven the one on the main shaft is stuck.
The book says that it can be pulled off by hand.
I fear that the splines may have twisted.
Anyone have any advice.
Tomorrow I may heat up the gear to see if that helps.
