T5 question for the Pro's......
OK, I have a junkyard T5 from an '84 2.8L Firebird. I tore it apart the other day and there was alot of play that caused some markings on the Main Drive Gear and the gear on the Cluster Gear. I'm considering just re-shiming it and running it.....but here is where I am confused.
One person has told me that the damaged gears will make noise in EVERY GEAR EXCEPT 4TH GEAR..........
Another person has told me it will ONLY MAKE NOISE IN 4TH GEAR.........
Who is right???????

It will make noise in every gear except 4th. Power is transmitted directly from the clutch gear to the mainshaft in 4th without going through those gear teeth. Every other gear transmits power using those teeth.
The trans is toast. Probably it ran dry. The hardening on those teeth is very thin; if you can see wear, it's garbage. Soft metal is now exposed. It will not last.
You can't tell how "tight" that kind of trans is with it out of the car. A brand-new one will seem loose.

Welp, would you recommend replacing the cluster gear and main drive gear( the worn ones) or just finding another junkyard trans?
EDIT: Also, there was plenty of fluid in it when I pulled it. All the other gears were perfect. Apparently, the excess play caused the damage. There is no pitting on the teeth, just slight markings.
