Mine has held up to 7.76 1/8 mile passes with 1.72-1.75 60fts, plus tons abuse on the street.

What actually broke, the pinion or one of the 4 pinion gears? and how did you rebuild it?

Well on the pinion gear I broke about 4-5 teeth clean off and chipped the hell out of my ring gear, cracked the housing. So I bought a rebuilding kit.. bearing and such. Bought new gears 3.70 a total of 450$$ i beleave and my father and i put the rear together we checked all the things back lash and wat have u. we preload the crush collar. It took about 3 to four weeks. I am going home at the end of March and will take pic of the pinion gear and show u want happened. We also welded the crack shut.

When you say pinion gear I am assuming you mean the pinion (which meshes with the ring gear). The pinion gear is actually the 4 smaller gears (also known as spyder gears) that mesh with the axle gears (also known as side gears). A stripped pinion is usually the cause of a bad pinion bearings, too much pinion depth or loose carrier bolts. From what it sounds of your setup, a properly setup 9 bolt should be just fine.

Welded what crack back together?

PS The 3.70 gear is not as strong as the original 3.45 was.

See the houseing where the crack was (aprox 1" long) cast. to weld cast metal u must heat it up red hot then u can weld. so u used a esdilen (spelled really wrong u know the gas stuff) torch and when it was red hot my dad welded it. then we grided it down smooth. i said pinion gear bc most people know wat is ment by that.

Correct, they don't make 3.40's but 3.45's are available.
