Zexel torsen questions, need an answer

I'm in the market for a replacement posi for my factory 84 3.73 posi. I plan on upgrading to richmond 4.10 gears since i ripped up my 3.73.

I also plan on an Eaton posi for the 7.5 in my car. I hear all this talk about the Zexel Torsen unit, why is it so cheap in comparison to the Eaton? What is the difference in these two and which one do you guys recommend?

Thanks much

The Zexel Torsen unit is a take-off from new Z28s and T/As that are going to become SSs and Firehawks (they recieve a HD Zexel Torsen posi that runs about $500). The bad thing for you is they are made to be installed in 28 spline rears which camaros didnt start recieving until 89. If your 84 has a stock rear end (26 spline) then you cant use this unit, so in your case go with the eaton , unless you want to try to find a used rear front a later thirdgen, perferably 90 and up because only some 89 camaros got the 28 spline rears. Hope this helps

You can use the Torsen with older 10-bolts, just need to replace the axles with 28-spliners. I went with Moser HD axles, $295 for the set complete with lugs ready to install. May be cheaper options out there also.

I am running a Zexel in my car and have no problems with it. I used to have the cone type version before hand which was a little smoother. The Zexel tramps a little bit under hard acceleration around corners at low speeds. I would definitely buy another one (if fact i might just to have a spare) You can't beat the price, and there is nothing to really wear out so they a long lasting product. If you are concerned about the axles, either find a 90-92 rear or Moser have a set for $225 (i think) that are 15% stronger than the stock 28 spline axles.
