what are the effects of a bad tailshaft?

I took my car into the mechanic today to have the ps pump replaced and to have my u joints inspected and replaced if need be. My u joints were in good shape, but they tell me that my tailshaft is in need of repair. My main problem is when i shift from reverse to park i noticed a good amount of thrust when the car is cold. Also, i noticed that when in park you can move my car a bit from side to side, like, it rolls but only so far you know. Is this a big chore to fix? Should i leave it to a transmission person or do it myself? What are the effects of not replacing it and letting it (get worse?)?

I could be wrong, but I don't see how a "bad" tailshaft could cause the problem you are describing. Since the shaft connects to the tranny internal gears I would think a faulty one would give you shift/vibration problems that would eventually screw up the whole tranny.

Maybe someone else can shed some light on the subject...but in any case, I would leave tranny repairs to someone who knows what they are doing.
