Doesnt go into gear

I just bought an 84 and the guy said it was slipping, but it wont even go into gear at all. I put it in reverse and it does nothing. does it just need a tranny rebuild, or what?

BTW-its a 700r4

If it doesn't move at all and it is full of oil then make sure that the speedo doesn't indicate speed, then it is the tranny.
