It is not hard at all. Spohn makes the crossmember and then you just have to have the driveshaft altered. I just had a new one made since it is connecting to a 9" rear end.
The 400 is the one of the strongest trannys you can get. If you plan on going ***** out racing (cheap) then it is the way to go. If you have the cash, go with a 200R4. Art Carr has those behind alot of 8-9 sec GN's. The gear ratio is superior to the 700R4 so you do not drop out of your powerband.

Buying the Spohn torque arm assembly is the best way to go but you don't need to go that far if you can't afford it.
Buy the B&M TH400 swap kit for third gens. TCI, Hurst and a few others make a similar kit. It includes a new tranny crossmember, torque arm mounting bracket and all the other parts required to do the swap.
You'll still need to get a new driveshaft made up since the TH400 is longer than the 700R4, TH350 or T5 trannys. You'll need a slip yoke for a TH400 since the output shaft is larger than those trannys also.
A TH350 is a much easier swap. The TH400 can take a lot more abuse and is cheaper to build. The TH400 is also a better designed tranny.
I ran a TH350 in my race car for 2 years and only went with a TH400 this winter because I also went with a transbrake. The TH400 was cheaper to beef up than the TH350 would have been.

I had a TH400 in the camaro, its not a big deal to swap in. B&M change over kit is the only way to fly although I fabricated all the stuff my self except the drivshaft. Your setup is close to what I have/had in the firebird I had a TH350 behind the 355 and it worked great but I went with a 700r4 just for the advantages of its 1st and 4th gear.
