700-R4 from Th-200C?
700-R4 from Th-200C?
My 82 Z has a TH-200C transmission in it that is about to let go and I was quoted $550 for a rebuild if i carry it in. I was wondering if I would be able to replace it with the 700-R4 without any mods, will it fit with the cross member that is on there? I am replacing the 305 with a 350 and I am afraid the 200 will not hold up to the 350 motor. I know the 700-R4 was offered in 83 and was in all Camaro's from 84-92 (according to the Haynes repair manual). Your help and insight is greatly appreciated.

I did this swap in my firebird.
The TH200c components will cross over, tv cable, cooler lines and linkage, they bolt and pop right on.
Problems, the shifter will not work and the crossmember will not bolt up. Even if you get a 700r4 crossmember it will be short, the frame (if you can call it that) is too wide for a 700r4 crossmember. You will need to use your 200c crossmember and make new holes. The tranny mount is identical. The shifter for a 700r4 will not bolt in. You can catch 2 bolt holes and use some self drilling screws to get the other two. The cablels although adjustable will not reach and one doesent even really fit the 700r4 clip but you can modifiy it so it clips in. The acuall cable brackets on the shifter will need to be bent for the cables to fit.
It's really not alot of work, you just need to take your time.
IMO, well worth the effort.

Im not sure if the firebird shifters are different, but i'm currently using my TH200 shifter with my 700r
I modified the gates so that the shifter clicks all 4 forward gears.
no problems with it over here
I had to modify my crossmember because the transmition sits further back so I welded on some brackets to reach the original holes, I also had to get a shorter driveshaft.
make sure the tailshaft on the 700 is for a camaro, it will need the torque arm mount

It would be interesting to see how you modified that shifter, any pics???
The shifter I used for the firebird was from my 85 camaro Th400
The one thing I forgot to mention before was if you get the 700r4 shifter (the all stock look) grab a lighted gear indicator PRNOD21 from the doner car. This OD selector is longer but will fit the piece you currently have with no modification or mismatch of interior.

I did this swap. The 'fun' part is making a crossmember that will work. If you have the tools, it's not hard. You may need some way to control the torque converter lock-up. I'm not sure if the wiring is the same for the 700r4 as the th200c. If you go non-computer, like I did, just pick-up a torque converter lock-up kit to control it.

what i did was set the linkage cable that park on the shifter and the trans were lined up. after that everything will work except you won't be able to lockout first gear.
so I shimmed the plunger so that to stop will slip past the last gate.
it took some trial and error to get the gates to line up with the trans, I mounted the shifter in a slightly different spot than stock

Doesnt the TH200 shifter have only 3 forward gears where has the 700R4 has 4.
Appriciate if you could detail a little bit more
