TH-350, TH-400, and 700-R4

I'm not sure if I should rebuild my 700-R4, take a transmission from a 4th gen camaro (no clue what those are), get a TH-350, or TH-400. Any suggestions? I'm trying to not spend a lot of money on the transmission, but still get a good transmission that won't crap out on me. It seems that rebuilding my 700-R4 is going to cost a lot and just put me back w/ the same crap I had before. A friend said I could get a TH-350 for $500, but another friend said not to do it because the TH-350's only have 3 gears. So, how many gears does each have, about how much would each cost to buy, and which would you suggest that I get?

What kind of driving are you intending to do? A 700R4 is a good street tranny but makes a poor drag race tranny. It has a very low first gear and an overdrive.

The TH350 and TH400 are 3 speeds. No overdrive. The TH350 is a light duty tranny that can easily be built up. There are millions of them all over the country. The TH400 is a heavier and much stronger built tranny. It's usually the tranny of choice behind high HP cars. It takes very little to beef it up. It takes more HP to spin a TH400 than it does a TH350.

Planning on street driving w/ either a rebuilt 305 or an LT1 as an engine. Both would end up most likely around 300 hp (somewhat below or above that w/ those engines respectively).

All things considered I would probably stick with the 700 but perhaps a later core and have it built properly. In the long run it will be cheaper and not compromise with no O/D.

You will miss the overdrive down the highway if you get rid of the 700r4. Drive around a few days just using D instead of OD on the shifter--especially on the highway. The rpms will be even higher than that since a th350/400 won't have a lock-up converter(unless you get the th350c).
