700R4 Trans Removal

When removing the trans from an 88 GTA, is it necessary to remove the entire torque arm from the vehicle, or just disconnect it from the rear of the trans? If complete torque arm removal is required, is it necessary to remove the rear springs to prevent axle housing shift or binding? Rear spring removal is called for in the factory shop manual.
Comments, suggestions please. FJK

when I did mine in my 89, I just unbolted the torque arm from the tranny, but be careful, that thing is under tension and it will snap up, so when you take that last bolt out, keep a firm hold on it, and let it go slowly!
