Tranny is out!!!
Tranny is out!!!
I just bought this clean '88 GTA with 113k. The tranny felt soft and slipped a tad bit when I test drove it. So after I bought it I had it flushed with a professional machine. Then I installed a B&M shift kit and did a tranny pan and filter change. It was 3 a.m. when I finished, and I was tired, so my dumb azz forgot to put the filter in it. I drove it around the block because it was slipping reallly bad. Then I realized what I had done, so I tore it down the next day and put the filter in. Needless to say the tranny slips still and I have no overdrive now. I have already ordered a new tranny with a shift kit, corvette servo, and a 2100 vette stall converter. I'm just curious, how can I tell if it is the tranny going out or the torque converter, other than the overdrive thing? Also, how hard is it to install another tranny? I haven't done this yet, but I'm fairly mechanically talented(most of the time) so I just need to know if it is a straight forward job, or is there a secret to it?

This is what i did. First get the converter to flywheel bolts off, next take out distributer. Then me being a small guy i climed in the engine bay and sat on my TPI while i got the upper two transmission bolts out. Took 5 minutes. I later then removed the dipstick tube. I then went underneigth unbolted the TA from the transmission, driveshaft and disconnected the TV cable from the bracket.I then removed the cross member and lowered the tranny back a little while have a jack under the tranny i got the other 2 upper bolts and finally the bottom 2 bolts. Before i pulled it away from the motor i disconnected the tranny lines and shift linkage. Also disconnected the VSS sensor and TCC one. I then pulled the tranny away off the dowels and lowered it and slid it out. It took me about 2 hours to get it out.
I tie a few feet of electrical wire to the hinge and drop it down
the dipstick tube so I can put the tube in the right place when
I put the tranny back in. Drain the pan and unhook the
TV cable and its bracket from the valve body, remove TV cable
bolt and pull out cable from case. It is a good time to unbolt
dipstick from engine block and push the dipstick tube from the
case. Put pan back on and proceed with removal.
