Bad torque converter?

I went out on the town tonight to have some fun, and we got to racing and after 2 or 3 runs I got heavy smoke and it seemed to be very "loose" kind of like a clutch slipping on a manual, when I launched. I pulled over and heard boiling and there was about a quart of ATF under the car....after a couple of hours when the car was cooled off it ran fine (after dumping in a little ATF), could this be my converter or should I start saving for the T-56?

My car is an L-98 putting out much higher than stock horsepower via high compression, tranny is the 700R-4 stock for 1989.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

hmmm interesting, the reason being is the same thing happend to me last night...i was at the track car was runnin good and everything was going smoothly until about my 4th pass i noticed my car started to peg-leg during the burnout, so i figured i just bombed my 11 month old torsen posi...i also noticed that the car wouldn't shift into 2nd gear during the burnout...anyway i make my pass and pull back into the lanes and then realize i've got a good sized puddle of ATF underneath the car comming from the converter area....u guys think i hurt it or what...BTW i launch the car off an idle (i know thats rough on the converter)...it really helps the et though
