I am beginning my transmission Swap (700r4 - t5)

I have a 1984 z28 with an l69 engine ( and a 700r4). I also have a 1983 z-28 l69 t5 donor car. I have read ButcN's article which is very interesting.

I have already removed the brakes, steering column and pedals from both cars. (It is going to take me much longer than the 11 man hours ButchN reported for this task) I will appreciate experienced guidance to keep me from totally screwing up this job. I have 2 questions this early in the process

1) ButchN's article talks about an A4. Is everything the same for a 700r4.

2) In removing the automatic transmission it is necessary to tilt the tansmission and motor assembly. Do I need to loosten or remove the front engine mounts, or will there be enough movement by removing the rear support?

Any bits of sage advice for me as a start out on this adventure?

Its probally not a big deal, I just haven't seen a tech artical using the cable system b4.

A4 just means automatic 4 speed so its the same. And I can't help you with your other question because its been a couple of years since I did the switch.

Tony89GTA,

Thanks for your input. Every piece of information which can help keep me from screwing this up is appreciated.

I guess THe cable clutch will add somewhat more interest to this adventure. I do have an 83 Camaro Shop manual (I bought an 83 Shop manual for 25 bucks on e-bay, and was hoping that 83 was close enough to 84 to be useful...So far so good). I will read up on whatever information is in there about the clutch cable.

700r4 to t-5 info

here is a good site that tells some detailed steps for the ENTIRE process, only preformed on a 91 z i think...

http://www.thirdgenresource.com/techpages.html?nid=95

they are swapping a 700r4 with a t-5, and although there are no pics as the guy says there are, it seems pretty complete except for the re-installation of the interior pieces after installing the clutch pedal.

hope this helps

Older style clutch linkages were mechanical, i.e. linkage with z-bar etc. You may not have the cutouts in the insulation at the firewall which are there in the newer cars which aid in placing the clutch master cylinder (my '85 had the cutouts). The driver side "frame rail" had two hole in its top for the the bracket for the left side of the z-bar assembly. You will almost certainly have these holes in your '84, they were sill there in my '85, but you may have to tap them. One thing you need to be very aware of is that the bell housing/clutch arm/pivot ball relationships are different on the mechanical and hydraulic systems. Also, of course for the hydraulic system you need a bellhousing with the mounting tabs for the slave cylinder.

Be sure you have parts for the right system all the way through which ever way you go!

Recommend you go the hydraulic route, you will likely have a much easier time obtaining parts for it.
