You should supply a little more info for us... do you have a short shifter or a particularly powerful engine (and thus beefier clutch)? These are some factors which might lead to the condition.
When I first drove my car I was surprised by the stiff clutch... as I had been driving hondas which have particularly light clutches. I drove my friends Mustang GT and it was even stiffer. I find that with my hurst shifter sometimes I need to completely floor the clutch to get to second... it is good practice to completely push in the clutch anyhow.
But we need a little more info.

I just figured sense it was a hydrolic clutch it would be easier to push in. Motor is a stock 305. I do remember after haveing the clutch changed about a year ago the pedel being remarkably easier to push down for the first couple of shifts
