Transmission mount (i think)
Transmission mount (i think)
im not really sure if its this or not... when im sittin still like at a red light or whatever if i just goose it it makes a Clunk noise like right where the gear shift is.. like i can feel it in the middle console..i have a 305 tbi and its automatic .. i really need some help asap if anyone can help its a '92 RS please help
it's one of two things:
A) the mount that hold the transmission to the crossmember, on the bottom of the crossmember you'll see a nut, almost in the middle. on the other side of the crossmember is the transmission mount. on my car, thats what was making the noise you described. to change it.. take off the nut on the bottom side of the crossmember, put a transmission jack under the transmission pan (or use a floor jack with a peice of plywood under it), lift the pressure off of the crossmember, and then there will be 4 bolts that hold the crossmember to the body. take them out and drop the crosssmember. then you will get a clear veiw of the transmission mount (mine came out in two peices, sheared right in half). two bolts hold the transmission mount to the transmission. take them out and take out the mount. new ones are only $10-$20. assemble in the opposite of removal.
B) the other optionis that it's the torque arm or exhaust hitting the floorpan. take a good look at the front of the torque arm, see if it moves, shake the exhaust and see if that moves up enough to hit the floor pan. if so, put in a hanger to hold it still. like i said mine was the transmission mount, the whole job takes about 15-20 min. and can be done with hand tools. let me know how it turnes out!!

Yeah man, I think its def the tranny mount. Mine were broken hehe to much torque.. :hail:L98. When ever I would take off with some zest it would clunk, and I would feel it underneath my arm, which was on the arm rest near the shifter. I was like what the hell?? I did a couple more tests and I was like its right underneath my arm, its right there. I asked a couple questions here about it, and they told it was tranny mount. And guess what... It was! Thanks guys btw. I say until ya fix it, just go light on the throttle. And when ya fix it, re-adjust the TV cable might have gone out of whack due to the tranny not being locked down. Which is another tip I learned here. Wanna know the best way to kno if its the tranny mount? My bro showed me this one. Get someone to look underneath the car. Put the car into Drive, put left foot on brake fully. And hit the gas pedal, feather it. You should hear that infamous sound CLUNK. And the person looking underneath should see the tranny clang against the housing. For the time being nothing to worry about, just get it fixed when ya can.
..I love it when other people have the same problem as I once did, its cool helpin them out with knowledge of already going through it.
