Ring and Pinion Install????????/

I was hoping someone could enlighten me on the setup of a ring and pinion, I have a few questions..... were is it you measure the back lash and how (I do have dial indicators) and on the pre-load do you have to use the crush collar or can you set it up and then use the crush collar???? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Pat, attach your dial indicator to a magnetic base and then place the base on the back side of the housing. Then push the plunger up to the backside of a ring gear tooth and rock the ring gear back and forth against the installed pinion gear. This distance is your backlash.

No need to burn a cc for set up. You can just tighten the nut down against the pinion bearings to get some pre-load then do the set up routine. Once you have the pattern and backlash you want then install your cc and put the rest of it together.
