Tranny Oil leak...where from?
Auto 700R4 question:
I am having a bad transmition oil leak. It is coming from somewhere near the back of the tranny because the oil is dripping off that bar that holds the whole thing up in there. Anyway, I'm going to try to get the car up and check it out sometime soon. I just wanted to know if anyone else has, or had this problem, and what needs to be done to fix it.
Also, how hard is it on the transmition if I were to leave it in 3rd and drive around? I would be going 45 at the max. while still in 3rd. Is it hard on any of the stuff in there, or doesn't it matter? If it actually causes damage over time, I wont do it.
Thanks

OK... I got the car up tonight and took a look at the tranny to try and find the leak. Well, the trans fluid is dripping off that brace that holds the tranny up. Above it is all oily too. The res of the transmition is dry except for around teh rear of it. The tranny/driveshaft instersection is not leaking. The only things I can think of are the rear of the pan or there the tail of the tranny bolts to the bell-houseing. I take it that the servo is right back there where the wires go into at the very back of the tranny? I'm not sure. Anyway, the leak is coming from somewhere around that brace.
What possible places could it be coming from? I am going to call around to some shops to see if they offer that seal between the tail of the tranny and the main part of it. I just want to see how much that will cost me.
If anyone has any suggestions as to where around there that leaks, let me know. I'm going to give it a fix next weakend, so let me know.

Here is a list of places that it could leak from check them all a narrow it down "proccess of elimination"
CHECK
Tranny pan looses bolts, missing bolts, damaged gasket, bent sealing flange
oil filler pipe for damaged seal
tv cable for damaged seal
rear seal
driveshaft yoke for grooves
speedometer gear for shaft seal, oring seal
the case for loose or missing line pressure tap plug
case for cracks
oil pump for missig or loose bolts or damaged front pump seal or housing oring
servo cover or accumulator cover for damaged oring seal
governor cover for damaged oring seal vacum modulator for a damaged oring seal
hope that helps

Sorry. but that does not help at all. I have never looked at a transmition before. I'm more of any engine guy at this point. I am hoping to one day take the thing out and give it a good upgrade or something. But until then, all I know is that the oil is leaking from somewhere on the back half of the transmition. If someone could narrow down which of those places from the list are on the back half, it would help out a lot.
Sorry about the lack of understanding. I'll try to figure things out.

I'm thinking it is the rear bolts of the pan.. I tightened all the rest that I could easily get to, and it seemed like they had worked out so that they were only hand tight or something. I couldn't believe how lose they were. This weekend I'm going to tigheten those up a little, and next weekend put in a new filter/pan gasket. Then if that doesn't solve anything, I'll start looking somewhere else.
Thanks for the help.
