Your 2.8litre is 173cubic inches (I think it's 173). A 5.0ltr is 305ci and the 5.7ltr is 350ci. I don't know how many cubic inch the 2.5 (4 cyl), 3.1, and 3.4 are though.

3.1--191
3.4--204 or 207....not sure
An easy but not precise formula is that each liter is 61 cubic inches. 2.8 liters times 61 cubes = approx. 170 cubes (actual is 173)

well, a 350 can be accquired for many different prices, but what you get is going to be the biggest difference between what and when. You can pick up a 350 v8 for a pretty cheap price, if you find it from a private seller, you could also check ebay for a motor since there are tons of them on there. Beware of what you pick up though, and who you pick it up from, sometimes you can find a dog of a motor, if the price is right, the blcok isn't locked up, but it's cheap, you might as well pick it up, slap it on a stand, and start a buildup...depending on your mechanical ability and no-how....but.....being that you're new to the board, and didn't know much about your engine at present (although you'll probably learn) i wouldn't consider a swap of this magnitude right off the back. There are a lot of other things that'll need to be changed besides the six cylinder engine that you've already got. The easiest motor swap for you to do is a 3.4L v6 swap from a 93-95 camaro/firebird. But that's about as easy as it gets, for a v8 swap, you'll be looking at a new transmission, new radiator, different lines i believe, different rear end basically everything including the engine will need to be changed. good luck if you decide to bite it off, but remember it's goign to be a time, best bet for you, put some money into you're little six until you get somemore car experience, and then once you think you're ready, prepare for a v8 swap. Good luck with what ever you do, and welcome to the boards.

welcome to the boards..
rop?? rpo im pretty sure it what u mean.. its basically a number given to options on the car (ie: lb8 = mpfi 2.8l engine.. lg4 = 4bbl 5.0l engine.. 1le = suspension upgrade.. mx1 = auto transmission)..
vin (vehicle identification number).. EVERY car sold in the US has one of these.. easiest place to find it is botom driver side corner of the winshield.. it just basically says what kind of car u have, what company makes it, kind of restraint system u have (manual seat belts, automatic seat belts) and a few other things..
2.5l, 151ci, inline 4 cylinder
2.8l, 173ci, 60* v6 <-- thats what u have
3.1l, 189ci, 60* v6
3.4l, 207ci, 60* v6
5.0l, 305ci, Small Block Chevy v8
5.7l, 350ci, Small Block Chevy v8

Someday I'd like to put in a 3.4 (my dream would be to find a cheap wrecked V6 turbo, take it home and have a hayday with it), but fat chance on that. If I ever wanted a V8 though (which I do) I personaly would just go buy the car with the V8. Unless I had a wrecked, but complete V8 doner sitting next to my V6 car in a nice warm well lit garage with every tool imaginable at my disposal with plenty of time on my hands, then I'd go for it.
