I think there was a recall with some of the gas tanks getting small pinholes in them im not 100% sure tho
This one is so easy for ya!
Open hood aftter you notice the "gas fumes".
Do you see anything?
Next after you drive, smelling fumes, park it, over a piece of cardboard to find ANY LEAKS.
Go have coffe, leave it overnight, your call.
Next time you drive, roll backwards, check drips, etc.
Oil leaks are as you suspect, dark, greasy.
Gas will dry, to a visible ring on the cardboard.
Find that/those answers, say hello again.
Gas cap, only you know if it's working right or not.
BUT REAL EASY TEST
Go to a FRIENDLY smog station.
Give them the GAS CAP, have them test it.
IF you by the Beaches of LA Area, I have a smog place that will do test for ya for free.
He's in Santa Monica.
Don't laugh, gas cap can fail & produce fume smells.
I really doubt you have a "leak" or else you'd see that gas puddle by now or be up in smoke!
Gvie those a try, yeah it's effort, but, you'll have better clues for price of a trip to smog place & free left over cardboard.
Where can it leak
Obvioulsy under hood/engine, back by gas filler neck area.
Gas lines go thru driver side of car (under the car)
Gas line under hood, driver side by power steering area.
It's one of those thick dark hoses, but goes top of engine.
Drive, make car smell, pull over, examine.
Don't use a match for seeing better
if you try this at night time. J/K
Good for you to research a reason/cause before giving up your hard earned $$ for no true problem!

check the filter on the bottom of the purge valve cannister, propally really dirty like mine was. I had to replace the cannister, but no more feul smell for me. Also after you run the car for a while, feel the top of the "COntrol Valve" on top of the canister, it should be cold, not hot. If it is hot, replace the canister. I got mine for $115 at a chevy dealer. This canister stores all the feul vaper, and if you smell gas, so i've been told, this should be the first place you look. Hope that helps.
