Dipstick ?'s for a dipstick

Hey guys

I just got my 86 project up and running last night. Now I need to replace my dipstick tube as it broke off when the seller was removing the engine. I broke mine off my old motor trying to remove it. So how are the dipstick tubes attached to the block? I was going to pull on from the junkyard this weekend but need to know how to extract this puppy

Im not sure on the 2.8 but most chevy dipsticks just slide into the block . they have a mounting tab welded to the tube which bolts to the block to hold it in place.
The easiest way I have removed them is to remove bolt that holds tab , take a pair of pliers as low on the tube as you can get , and carefully turn tube back and forth and pull up at the same time. Be careful not to collapse the tube.

I haven't yet, I will be, I'll tell ya what to do.
1. GO TO YOUR DEALER AN GET A BRAND NEW ONE!
Remove the old one (good luck, unless motor outta car).
Insert new one.
Use a wrench or something like that to drive in the tube.
They do make special tools for this purpose.
You can use almost any 60* oil dipstick. I use a 1995 3.4 one for my cars (from the swap motors). Has handy "T" handle.
Must twist/flatten metal stick end for smooth penetration into tube.
Sounds perverted!
BUt, true!
YOU NEED NEW TUBE!!
Honest or else wasting time.

'55's right; if I remember correctly, the mounting tab/bolt comes off of the driver's side exhaust manifold.
