Air Intake Setup

I bought a 91 camero RS 3.1l this week. Its missing the air intake tubes. Is their an aftermarket set up, or one I could make to get better performance since I have to buy this anyway? If you can post pics or website links for me. Thanks

if i were you i would go to a junkyard and find a TPI v8 camaro and try and get a Dual Snorkel intake.
i have the air intake that draws air fromthe fender, i ran an open k&N by removing the botom portion of the can style airbox. i used sheetmetal andnew shop rags to keep the hot engine air from being sucked up by the air cleaner.

I'm sorry, I know you just got the car, but for christs sake, it's CAMARO. Not that hard, eh?

don't waste your money on the dual snorkle, its too restrictive!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SLP sells a Cold Air Setup for $200 that can be modded to fit. go to slponline.com to buy one. Otherwise you'll have to fab up a custom setup with PCV in order to get true performance out of your car. DO A SEARCH, this has been asked a lot.

where did you hear that the TPI dual snorkel was "restrictive"?
wasnt the dual snorkel used as the best stock intake for the bigger 350's?

i bet you could make a better custom fabed intake that would out preform pricewise, and performance wise a wasted 200 dolla slp setup

There are many people who have made custom fabricated designs out of pvc and a k&N

i personaly want to give the TPI setup a go, ill have to put up some results it it turns out worse than my current one.

the reason i want the tpi dual is to test a ram air setup

take a good look at the dual snorkle, see all the bends air has to make? At the point is crossed over the radiater, is is extremly thin. Raming Air through there is pointless becuase it will get backed up there "like a traffic jam".

Sure were talking about the same intake????

I only pointed the SLP out as an option they had. Not everybody wants to fab up there own custom intake. Just wanted to give him ALL of his options.

He did ask for a AFTERMARKET SETUP that is available!

Actually its a 90* bend, and ask someone at Lowes if they sell it(they should) then ask if they can order it for you(after they check stock). No extra charges or anything. BTW that is Black ABS Plastic, NOT PVC. 3" Y collector.

hey i was lookin in the apearance and detailing board, Zepher had a dual snorkel style air intake on his TPI but its kinda a double version of mine. looks great, and would cover up that "5th row seating" in the hood i asked him where he got it, ill post it here.

i see what your saying about the TPI foreward dual snorkel, it appears to get restrictive, ill take a look at it when i go to the junkyard...

the one zepher had was a SLP Dual Cold Air intake and "the price was not right" starting at $299 it confuses me how an air cleaner can cost more than a 150 dollar 2030 cam

question about the custom PVC setup?

just a question
what if i ran a batt relocate kit
then ran a pve pipe to both sides of the engine, one to where the filter originally was and another to where the battery was suppose to be and but dual K&N cone filters on
question is would this increase performance or do about the same thing as a single
nobody has answered this, but my thoughts are it would....
just double checking

Thanks for discussing this and showing me pics. Due to the fact I dont want to pay 200-300 for some plastic on a v6 that is gonna be a daily driver, I have come up with a idea on a home brew intake. After I get it running I will attempt to make it and post pics for ya. Thanks again!!

when manny (zepher) had that on his car, he had great performance on his supped up TPI powered LG4. That would be great for an eight, but it is overkill for us. We will see most of our power from just getting a single CAI, whether aftermarket or custom, and the double would just be there for looks manly, so don't waste money.

FYI - he traded that for a LT4 Hot Cam for his LT1 swap he is doing that will be a sweet ride. His ride is one of my favorite rides on this board for some reason, I do not know why...

and the first choice is cheaper so
probably end up doing that

Stuart, thanks for the info on the dual set up. I plan on making a single 3" dia. inake from where the orginal aircleaner is up to the engine. Just trying to find a fitting to put the intake temp sensor in it now.

no special fitting needed. if you make your setup out of PVC, just use a paddle bit to drill a hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the sensor and the just screw it in. the teeth in the sensor will groove and seal right into the PVC. heres mine.

The dual snorkel intake would be worlds better than GM's lame "side air box" setup.

that defiantly is true Tom, but since he is going though the effort he might as well do a custom CAI ....

It would save him the moola in the long run .....

I have had the idea; if I ever got a bumper with more light room.
Something like the kitcar front bumper.
I would move the headlights to mid bumper hight. remove the two headlights and put a nice cover over the spot for two nice ram air ports.

I like the firebird / ta much better, but them windjammers headlights are dumb, but not as dumb as the camaro ones. [24/7 jammers]

Dont screw with my air flow; I want clean air.

I removed my hatch brake light for that reason.
GM screwing up the air to my wing, that **** matters when your goin fast enough to use it.

Previous to installing the SLP CAI, I simply had a K&N in the stock air intake box. I could tell the car was sort of chocking for air. You could rev the exhaust, but after you let off you could tell it was gasping. I had been in search of a CAI made for our cars for quite some time, and finally SLP offered one that worked for the V6!

It helped my car performance wise on the top end I would say. Accelerating from highway speeds and such. But on the not so performance side it gave my car a lower exhaust note, as well as a not so "choked" sound as I spoke of before. I was very pleased with this purchase, and one of the other things that I like about it is that it appears to look like it actually came with the car.

I have a 1992 3.1 v6 and i fabricated a cai for mine for less than $10.00. A flexible dryer tube ( 3ft.-$5.00) a 4in to 3in reducer ( $2.00) duck tape ($1.75)... connect the dryer tube to the throttle body and tape the reducer to the air filter.. Next use the top portion of the old air box the plug the bottom on the air filter ( i have K&N) leave the air filter open element and bend the tubing to fit in the original place. It provides no restriction and minimal bending. This set up with the K&N an 4 inch diameter tubing should prove 5+ hp for the same place as a medium pizza at papa johns.

kool kool
ive been trying to decide between the ghetto CAI or the actual CAI, been leaning more towards the actual since my friend threw a ghetto 4 inch CAI on his t-bird and made him slower in the 1/4
but its gonna be my next purchase, right after i get my shift improver kit installed!!
