3.1 liter internal mods
I just bought a 3.1 liter multiport from a 91 bird for 25 bucks. It even runs!!! Anyways, i was to tear it down and rebuild it. Since i got it so cheap i thought i would do some internal modding(since it will be apart anyways) What could i do internally that will give me some more pep around town. I will switch this with my current 3.1 when done. I was thinking cam, headers, intake, rockers? If i am on the right track, would it be possible to end up with maybe 170 hp? What types of products would you use?
well the rods are good to 7k supposedly. If you want some good ones, get 6 for a 350 and have the crank end milled down to fit. they are the same piston pin width and same length.
Cam, go CROWER. More choices and better equipment. With the rebuil it replaces just about eveything BUT the rockers.
Heads, your on your own for Port/Polish.
Headers... You know the sticky on the board. Typically with my headers you can go 1/16 all around to match the flanges.. Thats alot to gain in flow.
Pistons, DEFINATE replacement item. Stock are weak, get aftermarket. Total Seal Also makes rings.
I would suggest .030 over just to get everything on the same page wear wise.
Intake, get a dremel with the flex shaft, and a bunch of sanding drums and have fun. Gasket match, port and smooth it all over. I took about 1/16 outta my intake and the 2500 UP band shows it.
You might want to start looking on Ebay for injectors, send them to Rich At www.CruizinPerformance.com for cleaning($60) and have a good fuel system.
You can also get a AFPR for a 350 L98(TPI) then to tailor your fuel curve.

Me?
I install used running 3.4 long blocks and swap on & off stuff.
Its a smog legal swap, you get your HP rating ya want (165HP).
BUT 200 FOOT POUND OF TORQUE at 2800RPM
I buy low milage motors complete for $800-$900 (LA Prices)
You can install the headers coming your way for more pep.
BUT BE AWARE,
You'll loose your tranny with this swap!
Meaning- the new 3.4 power is so great it wears out the old non-rebuilt tranny almost instantly.
25+ people have done this swap.
All swappers report loosing tranny due to power increase.
Once rebuilt tranny in, it runs like a freight train.
I wrote the 2.8->3.4 Long Block Swap Boogie thread.
I'm doing this swap now to my 85 Blazer
Engine tranny gaskets & such will run ya about $1500.
Sell left over parts for extra swap money.
NOT CHEAP, BUT for longevity and power ya seek, it's agreat option.
Ya can use only 1993-95 Camaro Firebird engines, ONLY.

While I doubt the stock pistons are "weak", you really don't have a choice, because you've got to replace them if you bore the motor. Don't think of overboring a motor as a "horsepower mod", think of it as cleaning up the bores. If you overbore to the max, you won't gain much extra cubic inches or power, but you'll never be able to rebuild the motor again. Someone here... I think it was KevinS, he bored his motor out, and only went up 5 cubic inches. Forged aftermarket pistons are an additional $300 over cast pistons.
Oh, and for the heads, Comp Cams sells a 1.52 (or 1.60) rocker arm and pushrod kit for our engines. Combine that with a cam/lifter kit, and you've got the valvetrain taken care of. You could add the only true dual roller timing chain available for our engines, made by Cloyes, sold by summitracing.com (800-230-3030) for $90 to keep your valve timing more accurate longer. You might get an extra 1-2 HP from the rollers, too, but it's mainly to keep your timing accurate at higher rpm's.
Don't forget to rebuild the distributor, too. You can use a stock pick-up coil, they have nothing performance about 'em (they just sense magnetic pulses). But you can put a V8 external HEI spark module (like holley.com's #891-103 for $60) in, and hook up an external msdignition.com coil (like the Blaster 2 or Blaster 3 or Blaster SS) to get more spark at higher rpm's. You could use the GM Blaster too, but it costs more... and I think an external coil looks cooler.
