What Would I need to do to...
beat a stock 302 HO manual mustang GT.. this is a v6 2.8 auto camaro.. right now it seems like a freaking pipe dream.. but I read about you guys modding the hell out of v6's.. so I wonder if a really upgraded v6 could pull it off.. and if so.. what kind of upgrades... ?
Well , what year are we talking about 94-95 ? Or older style like 80s ? If its an 80s style one , forget it . They just built those 5.0s good , there fast . I hate to rain on your parade man , but Im being honest with you .
94-95 models ...STOCK ones run mid to high 15s . Not so good in my ideau for a V8 car . As much as I hate to say it , Mustangs were the King of the muscle cars in the 80s years . But , if they saw a 350 Iroc , they didnt mess with them .

Cold air intake, 8.5mm spark plug wires, high output coil, Crane 2030 cam, roller rockers, better valve springs, set of Camaro hunter's headers, high flow cat-back exhaust. Lighten the body by adding some fiberglass parts and get a set of 3.73 gears for the rear.
After this he may still win but he would have to know how to drive that stick shift pretty good. If he can't drive it that well, I say take him on now to see what mods you need above.

Most of these guys around here with these cars still on the road ARE fast . They have em modded . I've even seen em with superchargers .They were even fast in the 80s stock . Most of these cars are 5spds . Whoever beat you was prabably a poor shifter , they should have taken you more than one car leangh . No put intended . They'd prabably hand my *** to me with 2 or 3 car lenghts .
I've even seen some of em run low 13s and even 12s at the track !
but these were modded of course.

I have a decent chance of taking on a V-8 as I have 200 Foot Pound of Torque at 2800 RPM
Documented by GM in various literature.
I got caught by a 2000 Z-28 at the old GM Van Nuys plant location on past evening.
I GOT MY *** HANDED TO ME.
They had me off the line, but, I made a valiant effort to catch up.
Again, they caught me off guard.
We waved and saluted each other!!
Point being,
That V-8 car sped so fast outta sight so quick.
I wanted a NOS button to activate the system for the charge! Instead I JUST LAUGHED HARDER AT MYSELF!!!! As I tried to catch him he had the major jump off line!
ANY car with a PERFORMANCE V-8 has a MASSIVE torque advantage over these wimpy V-6.
You gotta remember these V-6's were just designed to get one up to legal street speed, economically. They were designed by GM engineers during late 70's Gas Crisis and need for better emissions after 1980 model year.
The first 2.8 was introduced in Sept 1979 in a Citation as a upgrade from teh 4 cylinder Iron Duke.
YOU WE CAN DEFINETLY HOT ROD THEM.
BUT
IF ya gonna choose a race, make sure you know the torque ratings of the cars ya race.
MEANING
Know when they are at peak torque. That means the competition you'll race, will have to have an engine that needs to spin that fast to get to that RPM.
If a Honda engine has Peak Torque at 4,000RPM, the engine spins fast & you'll loose. Think Honda/Japanese Motorcycle engines.
IF a 1980 Firebird, with a factory Buick 3.8 V-6 engine in it (that factory made combo it exists) has the Peak Torque at 2400 you gotta real good chance to win.
V-8 peak torque is at 2000-3500 range.
And the Torque rating is like usually twice what you can make in your V-6.
Our V-6's have to have higher upper RPM STRONG breathing capilities (meaning the bore to stroke ratio, a 3.4 spec set up is about the best it gets) and better gearing to have a chance to take ANY V-8 car.
The BEST thing our MPFI V-6 have going for them...
The intake fuel system is designed by Rochester and it is made at the Winters Foundry.
Legendary combo.
Think 1957 Fuel Injected Corvette
Think Aluminum 427 Blocks of the 60's & 70's used in Camaro's, Corvette, Can-Am monsters.
This team designed/made our MPFI intake set up.
It can be better, but, ........
Incidentially, I'll take the 2.8/3.1 intake set up over the 3.4, anyday.
WHY?
It's easier to mod the 2.8/3.1
More material left over from casting, so you can open up easier without going thru the side wall. OOPS!!
And it's already split open, to attack/grind from easier angles.
Just remember, the more you open up intake, with out the strength to "push thru more air" equals less power off the line.
Outta gate, last, loses, people.
Flame me all ya want.
Go polish your ride and enjoy the Classic Design of these cars.
They are now head turners and great fun for scooting around town in Style and Class.
NO JAP/RICE BURNER HAS CLASS AND STYLE.
Just noisey farting sounding and obnoxious jerks that drive really stupid in traffic with their other rice rolls reject friends.
BUT their girlfriends are REALLY CUTE & have GREAT LEGS!
Best revenge, steal their girlfriends!!
