You just remove it; if there's any vacuum lines or left-over open hoses, plug 'em. There's no real disadvantage to missing it; the cars can pass emissions without them. Do you have a manual trans? My '86 2.8 with Automatic didn't get a smog pump. My '86 GM Service Manual (Helminc.com) shows that only '86 2.8's with a manual trans received the smog pump. Stupid, huh? (well, good for me, bad for you! ) But two otherwise identical cars, why would one get a smog pump? Did they figure the manual-trans guy would be racing his car and creating more pollutants?

The smog pump is the thing(device) that is mounted below the alternator(on the serpinetine belt)

Do you have a Serpintine or "V" belt sytem? (Serpintine is a single belt) If so yes you can remove it easily, go to my site( http://www.geocities.com/generationx.../3rdgenheaders ) to get the new routing and belt length required.
How do I know this? I took mine off about 2 weeks ago.
Any noticable gains? not really, then again I lost alot of power when I took off my converter so....

PS if that link doe snot work then go to www.geocities.com/generationxracing/MainPage and look at the header link. Should be on the first page if I remember corretly.
