Cold Air intake??
Cold Air intake??
Hey, I'm new here so be patient with me, does anybody make a cold-air intake for the 3.1 camaro? I'd like to get one, or at least a better filter. Also, what kind of ignition mods can we do?

Yep you can do both... you can get plug wires either by MSD, Accel, Mallory, etc. You can get a replacement drop in MSD or Accel Coil, or run a CD Ingition such as MSD 6a or 6al. Intakes, if you want to spend money versus building your self one, SLP sells a single and double fenderwell intake...but they are pricey... i know from experience with my old firebird i just went a K&N cone filter and some 3" Sewer pipe and went to the drawing board and made one... Sky's the limit on mods, depends on money and time you want to invest.

Intake:
Is your intake a dual snorkel intake (Camaros only)? Like this one here:
http://community.webshots.com/photo/...43218086iPmPCq
If it is, it is already drawing cold air from in front of the car (in front of the radiator for that matter), rather than air from inside the engine compartment. From what I have read around here, this is one of the best intakes for the Camaros, it was even used with the TPI V8's. I have this dual snorkel on both of my 2.8L Camaros. When it comes to filters, you can get some high flow K&N filters - in my case, it is two for each car, because the dual snorkel needs two square filters (K&N P/N 33-2008). In the case of the dual snorkel intake, there are some pieces of plastic that the air has to curve around twice before hitting the filters, they are mostly there to stop any water. Some have cut these out (maybe just one set of them, so there is only one turn) or drilled holes to increase flow.
If you do not have a dual snorkel intake, the mods that "
Graeme'sFirebird" speaks of can be seen here:
http://exit3.i-55.com/~davidlt/air_intake.htm
http://87tagta.tripod.com/coldair.htm
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/S...49/ramair.html
And, one more thing, if you do have the dual snorkel intake, you can build a ram-air setup like some people have (essentially places tubing from the dual intakes down to behind the grill on a Camaro):
https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/ramair.shtml
Ignition:
Many things can be done:
- Rebuild distributor. Involves pulling out the distributor and replacing the pick-up coil, ignition control module (see Holley ICM below), and the o-ring. There are various posts on this board in which TomP and KED85 have discussed this topic.
- Holley ICM. Holley makes a replacement ignition control module for 2.8L to 7.4L GM engines that works for our V6's. It is P/N HLY-891-103 at www.summitracing.com and is $60 - the same price for a new stock/AC Delco/Standard ICM - so might as well get the Holley if you are going to do a distributor rebuild or needs a new module.
- Aftermarket Ignition Coil. MSD and Accel make some popular replacement ignition coils for our cars. MSD makes the Blaster GM coil (P/N MSD-8226 at summitracing.com) which mounts in the same location as the stock coil, and has connectors for the stock ICM/ECM connections. Accel makes one too (sorry, don't know P/N), but does not mount in the stock location. MSD also makes a Blaster 2 coil that is an oil-filled canister with the coil mounted inside, and Accel makes one too.
- Performance Spark Plug Wires. Ah, the ever popular, and not-so-cheap MSD 8.5mm Superconductor wires, P/N MSD-31199 at summit, $75.95. 40-50 ohms of resistance per foot versus 50,000 (if I remember right) ohms for stock wires. MSD also makes some Heli-core 8mm wires that look to be nicely made (about $40-$50). Accel also makes some performance wires available at summit (once again, no P/Ns)
- MSD 6A Ignition Box. Some have MSD's 6A Ignition Box - from what I have read on this board, it does not necessarily provide any increase in performance, but helps burn the fuel mixture more completely through the use of multiple sparks per single cylinder firing. They say it helps with gas mileage too.
- Um, I swear I am missing something else.
One thing that always helps is a full blown tune-up and fluid check. Should be a "TomP's Major Tune-Up" or similarly named thread around here somewhere.
Anyhow, enjoy.
Note: My MSD Superconductor wires, MSD Blaster GM coil, and Holley ICM will be waiting for me when I get home tonight, ordered them from Summit on Tuesday, can't wait to try it all out.

I see you've got the 3.1 so if you feel up for it, it's not too hard to make your own cold air setup out of 3 inch pvc pipe or some other material, I know I remember one guy here that made his out of muffler pipe and painted it and it looks good and probably alot cheaper than anything you can buy commercially. For ignition, I definitly agree with getting MSD or some type of aftermarket wires cause the resistance is so much less with the aftermarket and if you're like me and still have the stock wires, you'll notice a big difference when you step on the gas, the car will move not just sit there and decide if it wants to move or not for a second. Also welcome to the board, I'm pretty new here too and I'm already learning a lot from these people.

Hey TealV6RS,
I own a '91 RS V6 3.1L.
This is what I have done to it that you might like:
Accel Ignition:
replaced cap, rotor, wires, coil, and module.
( Wires are the 8.8mm yellow type )
Would recommend getting the spark plug boot covers!!!!!
when using 8.8mm wires, if not , number 2 spark plug boot
will "fry up" on you. Exccessive heat because it's too close to
the Egr valve and manifold. Had experianced this.
All of the above parts ordered through Jeg's. With NO problems.
spark plugs are AC Delco rapid fires ( At your local Walmart, or Auto parts store)
Air intake:
At the moment, just a "stand alone" K and N filter in the "stupid
looking can style" air setup.
I will be replacing it with the dual snorkel setup with two K and
N filters=====This is probably the best setup for air induction
without too much "customizing" ======
NOTE: if you replace your filter or filters with a K and N, I would
highly recommend upgrading the exhaust as well! I have a
dynomax exhaust. It sounds good, not too loud, but not too soft
either! You can get this through Jegs.com. You can also go with a Flowmaster catback as well. But I don't know the outcome of that one. It might be louder, but I don't know about the power.
Replacing all of these parts WILL make a differance! I also have a Hypertach streetrunner chip in my car as well. But I might be upgrading to the Thermomaster w/powerstat for more power!
Hope this helps!

Hey 89, the Ravin sounds great at idle a nice glug glug and even revving high it doesn't sound too ricy. Not loud enough to draw un wanted attention but louder than stock. I paid I think $240 and some change installed cat-back, mandrel bent and all the clamps and hangers and one tail pipe, no tip at Midas. I probably could have gotten it cheaper but dad was footing the bill so I did a few favors for him and got off without any out of pocket on my part. I still need to get a recording but it looks like the tape recorder got lost when we moved. Maybe I can find some way to use a laptop and a mic. btw, the ravin z-55 was 109 but that was including installation so I don't know how much just the parts were but the cat's still screwy so I can't wait till I get a new high flow cat so this thing won't keep stalling out at 3k.

I liked the looks of a more "stock" engine bay. (Though dirty...
) So I opted to buy the SLP CAI. Below is a picture of it. As far as the difference between mine and the home-made ones on this board, I think you'll see just as much change in one as the other. I just went for looks basically...

When did you get the Stang?
As for the post, there are lots of interesting CAI setups on this site. So you will have no problem on finding one you like and can afford to build.
As for ignition MSD 6A seems to be a great mod. Everyone who has one seems to have no complaints.

Tution at my school went up 8% which means to go to school and to live is going to be in the 13,000 range, so I sold it too save on student loans. But last night I hit a deer with moms car, so saving isn't going so well. So I might say screw it and get another car pretty soon. I just stay on the boards trying to help, i know how these sixes can pester us.
So your getting a TTA. Hope to see you back on the boards here. When you get it, or whatever you do decide to get next drop in old friend and tell us all about it and and post some pictures of it.
Alright Dale!!!! That's what I was hoping to see, now tell me how to make it. I guess i just need the pipe size and length and what kind of filter you have, and then what your elbow is made of.
Any noticeable performance gains????

Ok, the elbow is the stock flex tube. The tube (teal part) is 3" muffler pipe, kinda heavy. If you can get some 3" aluminum piping would be way better. Then I cut the iat nut off the stock air can, and welded it to this (after drilling a hole of course). The dimensions I can get for you after I get the car back in a day or two. I know its in the length of 16-18", but to be exact, please wait, and then I can also tell you how far from the end to drill the hole, and weld that fitting up the side. The filter is a 3" cone filter from autozone, like 20 bux. This car was unrunning when I got it, and missing all the air duct stuff, so I can't tell you an honest power change.

oo yea, forgot, the bracket that held the stock air can is removed, and the charcole canister has been spun a few degrees and only held with one bolt. I have better, larger pics I will send you if your linked to an email addy.
