Pulling stuff out this weekend.. tips?

Going to pull the engine and tranny this weekend from the 6 (if everything isn't just rusted to it.. !).. do I need to remove parts of the exhaust to unbolt the tranny?.. and list off some things I should do once I start rebuilding (hot tank/magnaflux etc I already got down)

Some background (I think it's on the webpage), my friend melted his 2.8 together because of a cracked oil pan- the idiot light was too late to save the motor. He scored a 2.8 for $100, and we dropped it in. Big problem- condition of that $100 2.8 was totally unknown as far as mileage, storage time, and if it ever ran at all. I think that had a lot to do with the motor dying; although my friend told me later that a friend of his said the knocking might've been an exhaust leak. Figures. We never did "meet up" again to retorque any bolts. Also, the filter was never changed like I said to do; I said change it and the oil after a few hours of runtime, then change it again after another few hours. I bet the oil filter clogged and the oil was full of crap that clogged the pump pickup.

Thanks for the help tom... and for $35.. that sucks.. you should of bought him from him for parts.. hell $35 would be worth it for a parts car... Anyway.. i'm looking over what to disconnect and where.. I really have no idea what i'm getting into.. right now I can't seem to figure out how you disconnect the driveshaft from the trans (I want to pull the trans+engine).. i'm assuming (only because I just saw it for the first time today) that he major things holding these down is that crossmember under the trans just behind the pan (i think?) and the motor mounts? (don't worry I realize there is MUCH more to take off to actually pull it out)

Oh yea and now (since replacing a lot O crap) its not really broke and other then the transmission acting weird I don't think there is anything wrong w/ it.. I just want to rebuild now before it dies... I seem to want to take the approach "this looks old and crappy.. better fix it before it goes".. while my dad literally says "don't fix anything until it breaks"... I usually respond w/ "so I should wait til so and so part breaks and strands me on the side of the road somewhere so I can pay an extra $50 to tow the car home when I could fix everything now and not worry about any of that?".. and he says yeah..
