Egr

Help!!! I have a 90rs and every time I de-accelerate the code 32 comes on. When I stop it goes off, brake again ...back on. It's driving me crazy!
What do you think it is?
Thanks

Other than the light coming on is the engine running ok? The code 32 means the EGR valve is malfunctioning . Im not sure if your car has the digital EGR or the mechanical "vacuum" EGR.
Sometimes just taking the EGRvalve off and cleaning the carbon off of it will cure the problem.
The digital EGR can be expensive .
The vacuum EGR will run around 50 bucks.

Dear I can't drive 55, (great name!)
My car has the vacuum lines. It is making a terrible knocking, faster when accelerating. Am I right that I need to remove the plemun to get to the EGR? I can see it from the side but cannot reach it. Oh, my engine is the 3.1 v6.

You have the digital egr. It is the easiest thing in the world to change. 2 10mm bolts and a wire clip. Then you pull it off and put on the new gasket and egr. No you don't have to remove the plenum. You don't have to touch ANYTHING but the egr. This is what it looks like...... Be prepared to fork out a good deal of money for a digital egr.......

Mine is the 2.8 with the vacuum EGR , so the other guys with the 3.1 could tell you more on this one. I do know that GM cars weakness is the EGR valve , every one I have owned the EGR valve had to be replaced.
There is a great group of people in here , you can learn alot , and they are always quick to help.

As far as the knocking . That would concern me more . It could just be spark knock , where the EGR is messing up . But normally that would happen when thje car is warmed up and under a load.

If your oil pressure is good than that would rule out rod or crank bearing.
Its hard to tell without actually hearing it.

Welcome to the group !

$700??????!!!! Every place I spoke with when I needed a new one said $200.

Beth,

I would try to track down the knocking the code 32 may only be a symptom of the knocking.

Check your timing and ignition system (like you plugs and wires). Bad timing or an aging ignition system can cause the knocking noise. Once you have that taken care of check the wires running into the EGR. The little plastic clip that holds the wires down can rub them bare. Mine are like that and it will trip a code 32 when ever the wires cross. You may even want to put out the diag fee to make sure your EGR is not the problem. They cost a lot of money and you don't want to just toss another one at it and have it not be the problem.

Were you able to locate it yet? If not I will take a pictur eof my engine for you.

Hi, I paid close attention to the knocking when I was out and about yesterday. When the engine was cold there was no knocking. As soon as the engine warmed there it was again! Just like the code 32. Not there until I de-accelerate; after the car has been run a few miles and is warm. The last thing I noticed was after lifting the hood and grabbing the dip stick that engine was hotter than normal. It was hot enough that I needed a rag to pull the dipstick out.
My engine has almost 200,000 and I re-built the body and interior myself, but I have only done a limited amount of work on the engine itself (not strong enough for the bolts), so I appreciate all the help! Beth

You don't ever help people! J/k man, you helped me set up the dual snorkel intake on my 92! Thanks again for that! You know Wayne, it might look a whole lot nicer than the vacuum egr but I would rather pay the 70 bucks to replace than 200! Oh, and all you guys can call me by my name Eric. elevario sounds so wierd! So Beth, have you found the egr yet? If you have, I hope you didn't pay someone else to put it in. When mine was going bad, I took the car to jack furriers to get them to tell me the problem. They were going to charge me 550 (can't remember exact price!) dollars to change and install. SCREW THAT! I bought one at auto zone for 200 dollars and changed it in 2 minutes. Really pisses me off about mechanics! They said they were getting the egr from gm for 370 dollars and the rest was labor! What freaking labor?! 2 minutes worth? So dumb, well good luck tracking the problem down and always remember to even check the stuff you don't think it is, because you never know!

Hi, I have met some really great mechanics that told me exactly what was wrong, showed me the parts, and gave me a discount on labor when they could. I have traded my time and labor re-upholstering seats and head liner/visors for parts and labor.
On the flip side, although I am no mechanic, some folks assume that I am lacking in all knowledge. I don't like to be treated poorly and take my business (and money) elsewhere!
Enjoyed reading your messages, they really do help me be informed so I can make a good decision on what to do.

Yeah, I only paid $60 for a genuine GM EGR valve. The Pep Boys one was $45 but was a universal, and the vac line didn't point to the right spot. Here's my old messages:

Hot damn, I fixed my car, first shot. Did I btch here about my car's stumbling problem? I was driving around one day, and slammed on my brakes because of a lady blocking the road. Shortly after, my car tried to idle at 400 rpm, and I lost power brakes, the car wanted to stall, etc. When I got where I was going, I tried to start it again- it wouldn't start unless I had my foot in it. I went for a drive, using both feet to drive when I came to a stop (keep the RPM's high and therefore keep my power brakes). Soon after that, I found my master cylinder was leaking.

This happened a few random times after that. I was told brake fluid can screw up a booster, so I thought I had a vacuum leak in the booster. Yesterday, I planned to check the plugs when I got home. I stopped for a light, and the car started acting up- perfect! I was a few hundred feet from home.

I got home, popped the hood, removed the vac line from the booster, plugged the vac line with my thumb, and started the car- it still acted up. I turned it off, and plugged the vac line back in - it's not the booster!

I then look at the engine - and it hit me - EGR valve! I put my hand underneath and sure enough, the diaphragm was stuck all the way up. I started the car, and used my compressor to give the EGR valve 10 PSI of air- the EGR valve slammed shut, and the car went from no-idle to perfect-idle.

So, now, the EGR vac line is plugged with a golf tee. Looks like I'll be doing an EGR valve soon- thank goodness I have the vacuum unit and not the expensive digital one!

However, the digital EGR costs a ton more than the normal EGR.

When I replaced my EGR, I got one from Pep Boys- it was a universal piece... vacuum input pointing the wrong way, mounted on a funky looking plate, and it wasn't even painted. Screw that! I would've had to cut my vacuum line and run hose to the thing. I returned it, paid $60 for a GM one that fit like a charm- and was painted gloss black, too!

TIP- After removing the EGR from the exhaust manifold, put silver anti-sieze on the EGR-to-manifold bolts. This way, if you ever have to pull the EGR (or manifold) again, the bolts won't be rusted up in there.

I anti-sieze everything I take apart now.

What is the part number you have for the 1986 EGR?
One can locate the digital EGR by scouting for that item on the FWD engines with a 3.1. Make sure you bring sample to match up for positive ID
One can DEFINETLY locate & OBTAIN that digial EGR item on any 1993-1995 3.4 powered F Bodies.
I know.
I got one with my 1995 3.4 induction system on the engine I slipped into my 85 Blazer.
Looks just like that pic.
Be very careful of the wire harness clips on that EGR.
It cracks so easy.
