Strange Problem on 1987 SC
Strange Problem on 1987 SC
I'm having a very unusual problem with my 1987 SC. I've got the 2.8MPFI engine, and a very bizarre thing is happening with regards to my Serpentine belt. Awhile back I needed to swap out power steering pump (including brackets). No big deal right? After this the car is running fine. Since then I've put a brand new alternator on there, as well as a new A/C Compressor. This is where I've started to run into problems. Apparently the power steering pump brackets I'm using right now are slightly cracked. Because of the increased load on my Serpentine belt from having brand new accessories on there as opposed to aging ones, the belt now happens to be running right up against these cracks in the power steering pump brackets, and bascically this is shredding my Serpentine belt. As it is right now, I need to throw a new belt on there every 30-40 miles. Obviously this is not good.
I've been looking desparately for replacement brackets. Apparently Chevy discontinued these in 1993. I remember having a hard time last time I was looking, but not nearly this difficult. I've been looking for about a week with no luck as of yet.
Any alternatives anyone might be able to think of out there? I know that the 2.8MPFI Engine was used frequently during the 80's, I would think there may be other GM cars out that I might be able to pull the bracket from. Does anyone out there know for sure?
The other alternative is to have a machine shop try to weld what I'm using right now. I'm not that keen on this idea, as I'm not certain it would really work. Any thoughts on that?
Anyone with any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I would say go to a junk yard, and try to buy a bracket without the cracks in it. See if that makes the difference. Those belts will probably cost more then a used bracket.
Install the new bracket and keep your fingers crossed.

Thats not cool at all.
I know when I first got my car I had problems finidng a junk yard within an hour or so. But now I have 2-3 within 30 minutes driving time.
If you can not find a junk yard tell us. Some one might be willing to get the part for you and ship it too you.
