Transmission Problems Maybe

Hi....
specs..83 firebird 2.8 se 5 speed manual tranny (Borg Warner not sure what kind) lots of mileage
where should i start
i guess this is a car used daily since other vehicles are in the impound....brother and father both got caught DUI...

but anyways
it all started with third and fourth gear when shifting into them there was a lil grabbin goin on...nuttin too major....
then all of a sudden after awhile first gear started to make the shifter jump.
again since it was only vehicle around still drove it.
shifter area would heat up enuff to feel it
then.....one day while drivin in fifth....a humming noise started.
seemed to only hum when being driven for a long period of time.
5th gear finally gave up....still werked but had the worst noise imaginable...grindin sorta high pitched....down to fourth gear....werked for awhile too
then....same as fifth too much grindin to drive in....but still werked
right now 1st 2nd 4th 5th and reverse all make very ugly noises when being used....3rd isnt makin the same noises as the other gears but it still makes ugly noises a bumpin knockin sorta noise.

i am not sure about what is happenin to my car....and this sucks cuz van don't come out of impound till oct 29...and have no vehicle around for daily use....car still drives but it's not too good drivin around with it cuz i figure it'll break down anytime

any suggestions...a friend suggested maybe a bearing...but i dont know.

Rebuild

How Much ya figure it would cost to rebuild....
would it be cheaper to go find a used 5 speed from a firebird and throw it in rather than rebuilding this one?

what year of firebird 5 speeds will fit into my 83 firebird?
are there anyother 5 speeds that will fit into my car?

Common sense says only F Body vehicles came with the 5-speed & that design is a sure thing fit.
ALSO S-10 Blazers, too. BUT ONLY the 60*V-6 engined ones, tho.

If the 86 is a v6, you should have no prob. The v8 five speed does not bolt up directly to the v6.

Ragnarok_Tyr, are the bellhousings interchangable? Say the trans he's getting is from a v8... could he put his v6 bellhousing onto the v8 trans and get it all to work? Just curious... I don't know much about manual trannies at all!

AND the TRANNY SITE IS PRIMO TO HELP YA BIG TIME.
THEY KNOW THEIR STUFF!

Well I Swapped Tranny

Wow....it's crazy i actually changed the 5 speed

well i did it and today so far it's good
feels like a new tranny

not much problems takin old one out and puttin new one in

new one from 86 firebird fit like a glove

the only differences in the two trannys were the old tranny had a mechanical screw in type speedometer...and new one had plugs
good thing they were interchangable old one fit in new tranny.
and the other difference was the clutch fork....it's shorter
still used it but had to extend a rod to reach the shorter clutch fork

clutch is really short but it's werking werks about half way to the floor and down

besides that the tranny works perfect and my third gen firebird got a second breath of life............R.I.P Old T5
