changing the steering wheel

i want to remove the old air bag steering wheel and replace it with a grant classic 13 inch wheel. when i go to start my car it says "infl rest" does this mean my airbag will not inflate?
what are the safe procedures to remove the wheel?

btw here is the old wheel

Well, if you remove the airbag-equipped wheel, it will DEFINITELY not inflate.

Give summit racing a call about the installation kit, or visit the website of the steering wheel manufacturer... not sure of grant's website, grant.com maybe? Search through yahoo.com. As to removing the air bag wheel, all I know is, when you carry it off the car, hold it so the bag points downward, that way if it did explode, it wouldn't go off in your face.

That Grant steering wheel looks like it belongs in a dune buggy. Go with a Le Carrera wheel and hub assembly with a bowtie horn button. Its a clean, definately performance look that still goes perfectly with the rest of the interior. I have a polished 4 spoke and polished hub with black leather grip and black horn button with engraved bowtie emblem. (I need to purchase a digital camera.)

I would also recommend staying with at least a 14" wheel. It is harder to control the car through bumps and apexes with a tiny 13" steering wheel.

Oops, Update: I did a search of LeCarrera and I can't find anything. They must be out of business. ( I'm showing my age)
My LeCarrera looks closest to grants Le Mans 4-spoke wheel ( Summit # GRT-1070). The LeCarrera's are/were much nicer quality.

ahh i think i have found the one
summit grt-742

ohh and by the way, i drove a 94 firebird 3.4 with 70k miles on it, mint condition car. there was just one thing missing... where the hell is the pickup? i swear that thing took off slower than my moms 92 civic. what gives? do they have like 2.70 gears or something? ps it was a t5 manual too couldnt even drift with the stock tires, or even peel out. that thing was slow

Much better choice going with the grant-742. It matches your shifter and pedals and gives everything that sport upgrade package look(even though no such one was offered, but noone needs to know)

I agree, that 742 looks much better. Dont' forget to buy the horn button... is it part of the Grant installation kit?

when you take the steering wheel off, just do what all my buddies do. if you dont want the airbag smacking you in the face, before you take the wheel off, just stab the airbag with a knife. a lot. then stab it some more. car been a bitch to you in the past? take all your agressions out on the airbag with a sharp knife. bet it wont inflate after that!

You can just diconnect the battery when you take the air bag off.

LOL you don't need to stab it.

LOL....Ryan_, don't want you to think I'm singling you out, but actually, the airbag can deploy, even if the battery is unhooked from the car. That's why service manuals tell you to carry it facing up, away from you, so you dont get an airbag in the face while carrying it to the bench. There have been instances of people removing airbags and having it deploy while they are carrying it. Remember, when you see a guideline (like DO NOT EAT THE INTERNAL PARTS OF YOUR NEW CATALYTIC CONVERTER), and you say, "Well, DUH, that's common sense", it's because some bozo out there actually did it once (or twice ).

Chevyguy, that's a good one! Although with my luck, my first stab would deploy the airbag -- and the knife -- right back into my face. Just something to consider...

If you unhook the battery and put the positive and negative cables together for ten seconds, it will drain all the power in the air bags capacitor, thus allowing you to remove the airbag assembely without it deploying. Well ive never tried it but thats what my automotive tech teacher said.

this is the procedure on how to disarm the airbag on 84-92 Firebirds,,

1. turn the steering wheel to alight the wheels in a straight ahead position, and thurn the ingnition to the lock position.
2. remove the SRS fuse from the fuse block.
3. remove the left side trim panel and disconnect the 2-way SRS harness wire at the base of the steering column.

then just remove the screws holding the pad to the wheel and remove, face pad/trim away from body incase of accidentally deployed and store trim facing up.

LOL as long as your sitting back and have your seat belt on it will save your life. Hitting the wheel will kill you or give you a concussion.

Thanks for the procedure, 90FirebirdV6! Are you sure there were air bags in '84, though? I thought those came out in '90?
