engine vacuum

I was checking the engine vacuum this weekend and it produced about 15.5 "Hg. on my MityVac pump. Since i have read in some posts that the vacuum should be about 16"Hg. up is there a definite value for it or is it just approximately. I m also gonna replace my vacuum hoses with new polyurethan ones. i think they are gonna look pretty good with their blue color.

I've never thrown a vac gauge on mine... I'll give it a shot when I check out my distributor cap this weekend for Ryan. Hey, where'd you tee it into? The back of the plenum? Or doesn't it matter?

Thank you folks for your help. I plugged my guage where the T-fitting is that goes to the vacuum reservoir and the cruise control servo. I also found out something quite interesting about the EGR valve solenoid. This thing acts like a vacuum leak in normal operation when there is no voltage applied to it. It even has a filter element in it that should be replaced every so often. When I disassemble the solenoid I found a small disc-like metall part which can be pulled by the electric coil to close the valve. When that happens there is no vacuum leak to outside of the system and the vacuum can pull the EGR-Valve open and eventually ground the small vacuum switch which is mounted on top of the electronic black box of the assembly. Inside the electronic part (where you usually plug in the 4-Way connector) i found a LM 317 T voltage regulator and some other parts but for what exactly they are good I haven t found out so far but I m still looking. In short I think there is a cheap way to repair this assembly. PS. I just considered it interesting.
