Chip Questions w/ mods??
Chip Questions w/ mods??
Hello,
Right now I'm lookin into a chip for my V6 camaro build up, the motor is stock now but I'm gonna soon add an underdrive pulley, MSD wires, MSD coil, Dynomax cat-back, high flow cat, and a multi-spark ignition all at once. Hopefully a rebuild with the Crane 2030 cam and roller rockers will follow sometime soon (funds premitting).
I was wondering which aftermarket chip would be best, I know some of them say they are for use with 100% stock motors but how do the work with modded engines. I'm lookin into Fastchip now, I did a seach and found that it seems to be the most recomended.
My big question is, do these chips work well with a new cam and bolt-ons, or do I need to get a custom chip made?
Also which chip would work best with just the bolt-ons I listed above?
Thanks for the help

Up to you on chips. The best seem to be learn the programing and make your own. However not everyone has $$$$ to dump, and time to spend. I personally like hypertech, dislike jetchip, and have not used fastchip or superchip.
I recommend doing your muffler, catback, and air intake system first, then do the powerchip, then one at a time add the rest of your goodies.

You might want to stay away from an off-the-shelf chip. Glenn91L98GTA told us a while ago that the off-the-shelf chips are far off from decent programming, especially as regards the spark advance tables. In fact, on his recommendation, I yanked my ADS Superchip- and noticed no difference. I say to save that $100 (or $70 in the case of my ADS chip) and put it towards something else useful/fun, like 1.52 ratio rocker arms, a Cloyes true dual roller timing chain (for when you do the cam), or even a set of gauges. 'Fact, same goes with the spark box! I agree with upgrading the wires and coil, but leave the spark box for last. I barely noticed a difference when I went from "just" an Accel coil to having an MSD 6AL box. I noticed a bit of a kick at higher rpm's, but that was it. If I had bought it as one of my "early mods", I would've been disappointed.
If you have an automatic trans, you can put the $100 (or, are we talking $270 if we include skipping the chip AND the spark box) towards a TransGo shift kit, a B&M Megashifter, or even an auxiliary trans cooler. Even something as silly as putting shorter rear tires on the car will increase your 0-60 and 1/4 times.
Funstick (one of the guys that burns chips) showed me the 2.8 chip's program at the gathering in Maryland... he said there's plenty of room to "play". The setup was amazingly simple, too... a laptop, a prom burner, and a prom eraser. Just hit ebay.com and search for laptop, you'll find cheapies like this one I just noticed: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2057794758 So for the price of having someone burn a chip for you, which I think is about $300, you could buy all the stuff to burn your own! Another benefit: You can burn chips forever. Say you burn a chip now for your stock computer, and it costs you $400 for equipment. Say you add a cam later. You can burn another chip for $0!

Thanks TomP, I appreciate the suggestions and will look into them all.............I'm also considering a 3.4 swap down the road, one car project at a time, but any input you can give me on that would be great.
Thanks again for the help
