What year Z24??

I'd say a 3.8 4thgen would beat ANY Z24.
The 2.8/3.1/3.4 is a different story. The newer Z24's came with the 2.4 Quad4 with around 160-170 Hp in a light car. I guarantee someone will chime in saying "my 2.8 thirdgen smoked a Z24".......whatever. The 5 speed Quad4 Z24's are quicker than our cars.

Meh, that's gonna be older than a '95. Those had 2.8's in them....maybe the 3.1 in later years. I'd say those would beat a thirdgen too.....but, then again, I say EVERY car would beat a V6 thirdgen......with the exception of something like an '86 Caravan.

A stick would have no problem but a stock no mod auto might not do it. I think you would need a good trans as well as a good tuned engine. but i dont know much about the auto thirdgens. Ill race him for titles with my stick.

the Turbo Trans Am is V6 and will spank a newer V8 with the right attention to mods

Well, off the bat, if the Z24 cavalier is MPFI (and I think they all were), they're the Gen II 2.8 motors, with the splayed valve heads, so they're already at an advantage. Add that to the fact that the Cavalier is a smaller car than the f-body, and it's definately possible to get beat by a little Cav, stock for stock, mileage for mileage.

I guess I will be the guy to say that he beat one of the newer Z24s with his 3rd gen V6. Of course I was spraying him all the way, though! I won by a pretty good margin against the 5 speed car, but I would've lost just as bad or worse, if not for the nitrous. I believe that the car was a 1998 or something like that.

Throw in my vote for the Z24. I have an Alero with the DOHC 2.4 and its 150hp/150tq in a 2650lb car would leave my 'bird in the dust.

A couple weeks ago I bought a 98 Z24 with the Twin Cam 2.4L and 5spd tranny, and let me tell you it would smoke my 2.8 Camaro (which ran real well, 50,000mi, good shape). There is no contest between the two. Now a 4th gen with 3.8, and Pontiacguy with his NOS, would have a better chance.

That quad H.O. (or whatever they are officially calling it now)is a good engine, and will definitely whip those cars around pretty well. The only thing I don't like about them is Front Wheel Drive. I never have liked it, and never will. IF you do, then I don't mean to offend, just my opinion. They are pretty cool looking cars too, until someone tries to ryce it out with a 2 foot wing, pavement scraping suspension, and a set of 20 inch rims. Ditto for the Sunfire.

Mine came with 16 inch rims, and I plan on keeping those there, but the rear end looks so jacked up I am definately going to have to put some lowering springs on there sooner or later. I'm not crazy about the front wheel drive either, but it is kinda cool when I'm stopped in front of the local high school (damn traffic) and I do a crazy *** burnout in front of those kids (a lot of which have riced out saturns and 80's civics and Lesabres.

Same engine, 2 different cars, one of them with the significant weight advantage. So if the engine variable is the same, and the weight of an F-body is much heavier, Cav will always win it. No Bs there.

That quad 4 makes 150 hp, the new Ecotec engine 2.2 makes 140, so there not as powerful as you said, but remember there light so there probably pretty damn fast.

I would say any old 3.1 and probably 2.8 Z-24 would smoke ya. Our 2.8/3.1 are in a heavier car. Those old Z-24 would go.

This is so sad............

Cool?
Junior High. 1970
1955 FOUR DOOR CHEVROLET.
Atleast a 70 foot smoking burn out!
Junior High 1971
Dodge Challenger Trans Am. Yellow.
Just rumbles up the hill in front of my Junior High School.
It was the Chrome Tipped Side Exiting Pipes that etched that memory.
Then their was Donna

Never did a burn out in High School.
Instead I was into doing 115 MPH runs in my 1966 Corvette.
The 1968 Dodge Charger, on the other hand.......
I got to see my first power braked burnout and BOY, I was impressed!

And come to think of it, I think the car owner was a GIRL! Yes, not a very attractive one, but...

I said cool because all those kids have similar sport compacts but are riced out. It is cool for me to have a normal looking car thats quicker than all of theirs and do a burnout in front of their school so that they are all wondering how I can do that without a coffee can muffler.

You wanna know whats real cool? One of the assistant principles in a Chevelle SS 396 doing donuts in the our high school parking lot a couple years back. He was showing off for all us students in our 3rd gen Camaros.

I drive past local high school and what I see.
I have a 1974 pic of my 1966 Corvette at my Pennridge High School parking lot awating me & I see the other rides....

I think that is SUCH A COOL VP! A for real SS396 Chevelle?

My Vice Pricipal was a true A$$HOLE, tried to "brand me" as something & I made him back down behind closed doors before I opened the door for a lawyer to step in...

Every once in a while this guy who is a local High School student, will drive by in his 1966 6 cylinder Mustang.
He tells me he gets such thumbs up from the ricers

Are high school parking lots guarded against theft these days? I know in school but.....

I used to have a 66 6 cylinder mustang. Every kid in school was incredibly jealous, even the prissy rich kids with BMW's. Getting gas in that car was about a 45 minute journey since two or three people always stopped to talk to me. It was candy apple red with about 200lbs. of chrome. Maybe not 200, but it was a lot of chrome. It even had factory original power steeringand air conditioning. The classic mustangs are the only mustangs ill even think about driving.

The 2.4 liter Quads were only 150 HP, but they have a lot more low end torque than the ecotech or whatever the other 4 cylinder is. The older quad H.O. engines were originally 195 HP, which is more than the highest output F-body V8 in 1984. They were really torquey, too. The problem was noise, vibration and Harshness (NVH), which was high. The newer ones have balance shafts and all that bull to make them smoother.

I had a friend's 66 straight six mustang for a summer once. I was getting it back to running condition for him. It was a pain to work on, because nothing would come loose. Bolts broke off instead of backing out. I guess that is prone to happen on a 30+ year old car. It ran pretty good once I got done with it, though it wasn't very powerful.

Yep, real SS396. Black gloss paint with blue and purple flames, chrome (american racing, I think) torque-thrust wheels, Those DOT-legal slicks (forgot what they're called) on the back, a full black leather interior out of a newer car (Cadillac I think) and a whole bunch of nice stuff.

About a month after I got my Camaro, a few other Camaro guys in out parking lot were standing around and saw this thing come flying around from the teachers parking lot. Tinted windows, so none of could tell who was in the car. Spins all around the parking lot, smoke everywhere, and he had one of the loudest engines in a street car I had heard at the time. So after the smoke cleared, he pulls over to us and rolls down the window.

Thats about when we crapped our pants.

IF you make sure that story gets into the yearbook,
you'll be the LAST STUDENTS to ever see that happen!

Man, your VP is way cooler than my "ZERO"VP was.
Zero as in 0 IQ.
Great High School memory!
Such a treat to hear that fun instead of the other BS going down these days.....

Now convince that guy to do it again with you as passenger!

There's a kid selling his SS396 Chevelle here. Actually he may have already sold it since I haven't seen it around. Wanted like 7k for it. Another guy I know has a chevelle same year with a 454 swapped in. Some guys get all the fun toys.

I wonder why I am seeing so many Chevelles. For a car that has been discontined since the 70's, there sure seems like there are a lot around.

I say EVERY car would beat a V6 thirdgen......with the exception of something like an '86 Caravan.
as long as it's a V6 Caravan, I'm pretty sure they have the 2.8s beat and give the 3.1L a good run for it's money.....at one point I had an 89 Plymouth Voyager 3.0 V6, and a 84 Camaro 2.8 V6 w/5spd....and sadly enough I think the voyager was faster, doesn't keep me from driving the camaro though....

There were ALOT of those cars made. ALOT. AND even back when I started driving (`72), there were alot of people who owned the prior years Chevelle to Hop Up & Hot Rod.
Chevelles started in 1964 model year.
