Fluctuating RPM's?

My RPM's have been fluctuating on my 88. When I first start the car, it will idle nice and smooth and gradually rev high like any other car when you first start it. Then it decides to kick the idle down itself, but will start getting higher, then lower, higher again. Like I can just hear it when I am standing outside the car.

The past couple of weeks when I am on the highway cruising at about 60 (or at any steady speed), steady foot on the gas, my RPM's will just drop down for no reason. Like I looked down and the car was putting out 1750 RPM at 60 MPH. Then I'll give it a little more gas and it won't do anything. . . then a little more and it shoots back up, revs real high and picks up speed.

I'm thinking that it has something to do with the trans. My friend said something about a vacuum valve or something of the sort. My coil is a few months old and so are the plugs, wires, cap and rotor. So they are all good. Thanks for any insight!

The Camaros do not have a vacuum controlled transmission. Starting in 82, the transmission shift points were controlled by the TV cable.

Given that your idle is fluctuating, I would have the IAC valve and the throttle body cleaned. Also inspect and repair any broken vaccum lines.

I've got the same problem but it got better and better as I repaired my ignition...I assume vacuum at first too...don't know if it's still there or not.. I dunno about the IAV valve..but throttle body cleaning is wayyy easy. Just don't use carb cleaner unless you got a carb!!! And you don't if it's the original engine.. Maybe your fuel injectors could use a cleaning too...
