84 carbed ( tranny shift)

well i got my 84 running descent just need to get to those motor mounts. One thing i noticed was that it won't shift from first to second. What tells the transmission to shift on these models. Is it an electrical connection on the carb?

thanx

nah, it just stays in first does not change gears at all. This happenned to my 79 and the problem was the vacuum line that went to tranny. The 84 has no vacuum line, instead it has computer crap. What wire tells the tranny to shift?

Is yours a 700-R4, or something different like a 200C or something? If it's a 700-R4, it's a hydraulic tranny....and there SHOULD be a TV (detent) cable...that controls hydraulic pressure in the tranny, which controls hydraulic fluid pressure in it, which changes shift quality and shift points...but still it'd have to be severely messed up to not allow it to shift at all. It could be running at no pressure..*** forbid...

Adjust the TV cable or replace if necessary as a start. My 83 had a stretched TV cable and wouldn't get out of first.

Just be very very careful adjusting it. If it's not shifting, it's probably been running on low/no pressure for some time now...and kicking the pressure up all of a sudden will blow everything in the tranny. If you can, try to tighten the cable in small increments at a time to slowly and gradually bring the pressure up...but be very very careful with it..because if it has been running without pressure, and has any decent mileage on it, there's a very good possibility that your tranny is as good as dead. : /

ok good and bad news. the shifting must of been all in my head. I drove it down the street today and it shifted into second. Didn't go much faster because my motor mounts are shot and i have nothing but exhaust manifold on it. ( no y pipe) The bad news out of it all was that before it shifted into second, it hung in first for about 2 seconds ( car was not gainin speed) then it shifted and everything was fine. I guess that i just have to adjust the kickdown a little.

Well thanks for all the replies and i will make shure i adjust the kickdown and little at a time.
