help diagnose post timing chain problem

ok, i changed my timing chain, and after that, it seemed like at WOT it would not accelerate like it should. i posted, and most of the replys on this board suggested i didnt line up the timing marks on the cam and crank gears right.

well, apparently, the timing was retarded 2*. had it set back to 10* advanced (stock, for v6).

now, it accelerates fine. here is what it is doing though...

from a stop (1st gear) it wont shift until it reaches 2500 rpms...a real problem when you are driving down a neighborhood street at 15 mph, and it's wound to 2grand. also, when it's doing this, it seems like from, say...1700-2000 rpms, it doesnt pull....acts like its in neutral until it goes above 2000 rpms.

after it shifts out of 1st (at 2500rpm) it acts normal.

and ACTS NORMAL when WARM.

FYI...this is a 91 3.1, auto

so what is it?? you guys still think i put the gears in one tooth off?

Shifting problems like you list are typically caused by a TV cable mis-adjustment.

Did you happen to check the timing before the timing chain change? If it was at 10 deg BTDC then went to 8 deg BTDC after the timing chain change, something is wrong.

Here is why I think that. As a chain stretches the timing will lag, so the distributor is advanced to bring it back. After the chain is replaced the timing should now be over advanced. Don't have a number for how much though.

Instead of being a tooth off, the sprocket(s) may have been built incorrectly. All it takes is an incorrectly indexed hole on the upper or an incorrectly indexed keyway on the lower. (I've seen this wipe out the valves on a hi-po engine).

How's the power? When warmed up does it still go like it did @ WOT before the chain change? This would be the biggest indicator of being a tooth off.

Also, did you align the sprockets before you removed them? If you didn't and rotated the crank and cam separate from one another . . .

RBob.

OH ****....it just hit me when you said improperly adjusted TV cable....i detached it so i oculd get to the ac comp. bolts easier, and to be quite honest, i really don't remember REattatching it!!!

man do i feel dumb. my car is not exactly near right now, so i'll have to go check it out tomorrow.

could driving with the cable completely unattatched damage anything??

maybe i did, but i dunno....
