It has been a while since I put in my Accel module, but it is pretty simple.
Just take off the distributor cap and rotor (don't forget to put the rotor back in the exact postion).
Unplug the connections to the module.
I can't remember if there are bolts holding the module down, if there are then just unbolt them.
Unplug the module and put in your new one
My Accel module came with silicon lubricant to spread on the side of the module that touches the metal to dissipate excessive heat.
I don't know if you need that, but it wouldn't hurt.
Then just plug it the module in and reconnect everything.
It really is simplier than you think.

Right, take the cap off, dx wires going to it, unscrew via sockets listed in my above post. Smeer goop on, sit in place, screw back down, plug up wires, put cap back on.
Then on to the next project

I can honestly say NO DIFFERENCE
IF the engine starts & runs ya got a good part.
Bad alternator does the magic of going thru modules! Electrical spikes
I'd say
spray carb cleaner on the base, MAKE SURE the Distrbitor BASE VENT HOLES ARE UNPLUG UNCLOGGED,
go get Permatex Dielectric grease and use that instead of what comes with the module.
When ya play with the clips & such BE PREPARED FOR CRACKING CLIP ENDS
Heat does in the plastic and makes it crack easy.
Here's how I mounted my coil, so much quicker & easier.

This is all the ignition stuff I have:
Accel 300+
Accel cap + rotor
Accel ignition module
Accel coil
MSD 8.5mm wires
Bosch platnum +4 plugs
By themselves, I didn't notice any gain, but when combined together I sure did noticed a big difference in mpg and my rpms increased throughout the powerband.

The wiring harness stayed exactly where it was.
ALL wiring went there. No tricks on that detail.
I merely mounted the coil in this position.
That bracket we have that holds coil over exhaust manifolds? I "removed the coil from that spot" placed it under "rain gutter" over hang.
I used thick strips of alumnium as you see. The stainless steel wire?
Holds the coil plug wire away from the coil to prevent chaffing of wire cover.
This is a very simple idea, try not to complicate it. I always use what the factory engineers designed, when possible.
My 1985 Blazer has the same idea and I've done that set up (also Accel coil) for over 100,000 miles of no problems. My Blazer has 211,500 on it.

Karl, is that an oil filled coil? Just wondering if it was meant to be installed upside down!
The GM Service Manual http://www.helminc.com and the 82-92 Haynes $16 manual tell you how to replace the module. It's not often that aftermarket performance parts come with installation directions.

Tom
YOU GET MARRIED & JUST BACK FROM HONEYMOON?
Serious, on the coil detail.
I have no idea is oil filled.
I can say that my Accel coil in my Blazer (that's been there for over 100,000 miles) is in the same position, "wrong", not right side up.
No performance problems ever.
None zero zip.
I've even seen other GM coils in this position.
Serious, not a problem by mounting this Accel coil the way I show.
