Massive power increase! long winded post

well i dunno about massive, but something has happened to my lowly 3.1. its a lot faster then usual. there is this open road where i usually get heavy on the gas, and everday when i pass this certian point, im just barely breaking 60mph and it feels like i got no acceleartion left. Today though, i hit that same point and i was doing 80 and it was still pulling pretty hard! i had to stop because of a turn tho, but im sure id be doing 90 in 3-4 more seconds. i also had both of my windows down and that probably isnt good for aerodynamics. Today is cooler then it has been lately, about 45F rather then 65-70. Is that temperature difference alone enough to make this big a difference? i remember back a few weeks when it was always cold, and i dont think it ever pulled that hard even in colder temps. is today just the perfect mix of humidity, temperature, etc for performance? i have no other explaination. i havent done any new mods. on saturday tho, i cleaned my engine bay with degreaser and sprayed it down with a garden hose then dried it but i dont see how that would do anything.

i notice now, when im playing with the throttle under the hood, i have a lot more control over the rpms. last time i was playing with it, i'd move the throttle a few mm and nothing happened at all, then i got to a point where the rpms just suddenly surged. now i can move it a little bit and i hear the rpms gradually increase. what does this mean?

also, should my 700r4 be shifting into OD at WOT? Im pretty sure it slipped into OD at around 70mph, then it started accelerating all over again. not positive but i think thats what happened. i think i read somewhere that these tranny's dont shift into OD if your WOT. either way, once i hit 70 i had a new burst of acceleartion, like i was in a fresh gear or something. i just wish i could get access to a track right now and see how it runs over that.

finally, my car is making a new smell, and it reeks. first thing that came to mind was my transmission, but i smelled the fluid while the car was running and it didnt smell like anything. the smell is coming from somewhere under the car, i couldnt detect it in the engine bay. dont think its my cat either, its brand new and it doesnt smell like rotten eggs really. i cant describe the smell, but ive never smelled it before. i smell it only when running it hard then i come to a stop. oil is fine, just changed last month and level is good. smelled my exhaust tips and wasnt coming out of there either. coolant is fine as well, and my engine temps never even hit 220. what else could be causing a stink? only thing that comes to mind is the tranny but the fluid isnt burnt and doesnt smell at all of anything. could it still be the tranny? Underneath my car isnt the cleanest of undercarriages with some minor leaks here and there that have built up along the tranny and engine, is it possible that the hot exhaust is heating those leaks up and causing a stink? im really worried its the tranny but it is shifting fine as far as i can tell and the fluid looks "healthy" with no smells.

sorry for the long post, got kind of carried away. but im really excited over this new found performance, i just hope its not a one day thing and its gone tomorrow. also worried about that new smell, *crosses fingers its not the tranny*

Your tranny should remain in D for Wide open throttle.

so does that mean something isnt adjusted right? i always leave the shifter in OD even during hard runs. if i keep my foot to the ground and its in OD it will not shift into 4th??

I am not quite sure what you meant there. If you are doing WOT you should not shift into OD.

But if you get up to lets say 100 mph then ease off the gas the transmission should then shift itself into OD.

You probally can't go fast enough to get into OD anyways.

Shift from First to Seccond = 45MPH
Shift from SECCOND to third = 85 MPH@6000RPM

You won't get into OD.

The transmision won't shift into OD at WOT anyways.

You'd have to get the B&M kickdown kit that TomP has.

the smell could just be something that you ran over and it got stuck on the bottom of the car and is burning off. It wouldn't be the first time I've heard of that. Maybe a styrofoam cup or something got stuck on your radiator(went under the front, hit the air dam, and got scked up and melted to it.) Dunno man, but good story. Hope it stays like tha for you.

well its still fast today and its raining out. gotta wait for hotter weather to really see if it stays fast in hot temps though. i guess this is where my performance "should" be for a v6, but was missing it for whatever reason until now. any idea's on what could have changed that got my power back? seriously before it would struggle hard accelerating past 60, now it just wizzes by. something had to be wrong and somehow it corrected itself?

Actually what happened was someone had HITHERE NOS tank leak and you ran thru the cloud But at wide open throttle the tranny kicks down to drive"3rd gear" aka the passing gear.
