I the motor loping at idle? not constant or smooth- more like surging.

If so then it may be the EGR valve diaphram is bad and causing a severe vacuum leak. This will cause the brake pedal to be hard at low speeds and the car to die occationally at stop lights when the pedal is depressed. You don't have adequate vacuum pressure in the system to supply the booster without bobling the motor.

If I were you, I wouldn't drive until you fix the brakes; going to the track shouldn't even be a concern until those are fixed.

Sounds like basic repair/replacement stuff to me... you two should be able to figure it out easy. The Haynes 82-92 book should have procedures on those. Good luck!

who said anything about valves? it just sounds like u need to keep up with the routine maintence and fix the problems as they arise. one thing u cant do on these cars is let one problem slip by, it'll only get worse and take something else out with it. check your egr and vac lines for any leaks. if u havent done a tuneup in a while time for new plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor. check your ignition coil, change your fuel filter.

you probably just have a little problem taht is easily fixed causing all your headaches.

Check your plugs, they could be fouling out on you. At least for the dieing at a stop part, my car did that when the plugs fouled. When was the last time you had your system flushed? Radiator, and block water passage ways might be cloged a little. A thermostat could be bad. Check for any cracked vaccum hoses.

Did you start it during the 5 months? Check the plugs, I'm betting on that to be a/one cause of your problems.

My car did the whole rough idle and stall BS too- maybe its time for a new fuel pressure regulator- it may also be why you might need new plugs , cap, rotor, ya know..

ok, here's my 2 cents...

Start with fixing the brakes. No sense in goin' out and crashing because you knew your brakes don't work right, but you took it out anyway. Check the Brake Booster vacuum hose. if you have a crack in it, it'll cause your power brakes to go out and make it A LOT harder to stop.

Next, go down to a junkyard or somethin' and get a hold of another power steering pump. If you can afford it, get a new one. It's relativly easy to install since it's right on the front of the engine. The hardest part will be hooking up the lines and bleeding it. Not to hard, but the hardest of the procedure.

Now find out why your engine is overheating. Check your thermostat. it might have rusted shut from sitting so long. Not likely, but possible. Is there enough coolant in the radiator. Does the top radiator hose get warm after it's run a while?

ok, finally, pull the code from the computer to find out why your light is comming on. jumper the A and M terminals on the ALDL connecter under the driver side dash and turn the the ignition key to on. DO NOT start the car, just turn the key to ON. See the picture if you're not sure on which connector is which. With this code, we will be able to help you more.

Like Tom said, worry about getting your car running right before you even think about going to the track. It might take you a while, but the rewards will be well worth it.

Do the TomP tune up after you get all this fixed. If you think it runs right after all these problems are gone, you'll be amazed at how it runs after the tune up.

Remember your car is old compared to most on the road these days, and chances are, the person who had the car before you didn't take the best care of it before you got it. Things are gonna go wrong, that's why there are so many posts on this board about fixing things. Ask any one of us, we've all been through it. Don't give up on it. There is such a feeling of accomplishment when you take something that runs like crap and make it all better. Trust me...it'll be worth it in the long run.

the brake booster is right behind the master cylinder. Look for the thing filled with liquid on the driver's side. you can't miss it. There should be a big *** hose comming out of it and going onto the back of the engine. This is your vacuum line to the brake booster. If you're in doubt about it's condition, replace it. Not only will it make your brakes act up, but it will make your engine run like crap. Sounds like you are getting a lot done. Good job on that. Should be up and running pretty soon. Good luck man.

good deal man. Glad to hear that your ride is good as new agian. Nothin' like the feeling of accomplishment after you've fixed what seems to be a major problem, huh? Good luck, and if you have anything else, feel free to ask.
