V6 auto same as V8?

I have an ailing 700R4 tranny in my L98 car, and I am looking to pick up a junkyard special trans to have rebuilt. Finding one locally has been a bit of a pain and I wonder if the Auto/OD trans from a V6 is the same... anyone know FOR SURE (no guesses needed, thanks!)...

Thanks in advance!

Car: 1991 Corvette Coupe
Engine: L98
Transmission: 700R4/4L60 same trans different name
No

the case is different in that the bellhousing bolt pattern is unalike and can not be adapted to fit

also, while MOST, of the same internals are used, the V6 700R4's used less clutches in their packs, thus making them weaker and less suitable for V8 power

to top it off, the input shafts are also different

the V6 700R4 is sometimes referred to as the "baby" 700R4

Yep!

It's 100% true, as stated from 1991tealRSt-topGuy,
You can not use a V6 trans. for a V8 motor.

You'll have to either go to the junkyard to find a V8
700R4 trans., and have it rebulit to hold whatever
amount of horsepower, or buy one new, factory or
"punched out" ( high performance).

Try Jegs.com for one. I think they run about $1600
without a torque converter. I think TCI makes
a decent one.

Also, try using your search engine on your internet
service to check ones nationally.

You can also try Ebay.

another source to find em would be trans am creations, or even thirdgen resource and hawks thirdgen parts. Both stock em i believe, and that would work. Or call some local tranny shops, i'm sure someone knows where you could find one, or they could find one and put in.

The camaro/firebird v6 tranny is different, however. If you find say an S-10 or jimmy that's using a 4.3L v6 and has a 700R4 the transmission is the same as the v8 one. Be sure that the car is a 4.3L though, as a 2.8L won't work. If you get a chance to see both transmissions out of the car, you'll notice the drastic difference in the bellhousings and compatibility issues.

hawk and 3rd gen are probably gonna want good money for theirs... I just need a 'core' really.

On the s10 and Jimmy trucks, what year did they go VSS? I have a '91 and it has the VSS for the speedo.

I don't have an answer for you here, but you can
try calling your local Chevy dealer and ask a tech
or parts guy, they should know!
