3.1 stalling

my car has began to stall. it started on wendsday and was pretty bad it would die almost every stop sign unless i used both feet and gave a little gas while breaking. today i replaced my EGR valve with one a got for free (just found out my cousins salvage has a 91 firebird that has its complete motor and its a 3.1 so now i basicaly have my own parts car lol) out of a junkyard. that helped alot but it still is stalling some. now its only about 1 out of 10 stops that it stalls. what else could i do to help this problem? its almost like my torque converter is a super low and it doesnt want to disengage with the motor when i come to a stop. all i know is this is Extremly embarassing and i realy want to get it fixed soon. it was overheating too but i stole the front air dam off that firebird and that helped ALOT. my fan still isnt working tho so i still need to track that problem down. what else could i do to help stop my car stalling?

maybe it's the MAF (Mass air flow sensor) that happened to me and i replaced that and then it didn't stall

If it is like you say where it feels like the torque convertor doesn't want to disengage it may be the TCC solenoid. If you can pop the trans into neutral when this starts to happen and it 'fixes' it. . .

Then replace the TCC solenoid. This is a fairly common problem.

Have you had the battery disconnected recently?

RBob.

P.S. 3.1's don't use a MAF.

It's possible it could be the TCC, but I'd check/clean your IAC valve first. Sounds like a sluggish IAC valve to me... I doubt it'd be the torque converter unless it's EXTREMELY slow. A torque converter is supposed to unlock during braking, and if you pass below 40 mph at any point. So for the TCC to stay engaged all the way to near a stop...sounds far-fetched. FYI, the converter can only engage in 2nd gear and beyond. Physically impossible for it to lock in first gear. If your TCC is staying locked when you are slowing down, you should be able to tell. Car's operation is jerky. Feels like a stickshift when you hit the brakes and leave it in gear. Essentially, it's the same thing.

My '90 f-bird was doing the EXACT same thing before I sold it. I did the IAC and Oil Pressure Sending Unit all at the same time and never stalled after that. FYI, do the IAC....its cheap and easy at Autozone.

Hey Nixon1, so far so good. I have had it for 2 months now and already have 3800 miles on it. The car makes you want to drive everywhere....lol!

Yea if flies alright, there is a whole lot of power there. My stick driving ability has gotten MUCH MUCH better, so its getting more and more fun to drive everday.

There are some first model year qweerks though, but thats to be expected. There is a small clear grease smear on the windows after you roll them down. No biggie really, just too tired lately to take care of it. And occasionally when its cold out (below 50*) I am having a hard time getting in second gear w/o double clutching. I think I am going to have them take a look at it when it goes in for the next oil change.

Other than it a blast and a head-turner thats for sure. I wasn't aware the you got a 'stang. How is it to drive in comparison to the f-body.

Good to hear about the car..

Well, the Stang is...different, but the same. Same harsh, crappy
"American muscle" ride quality. Loads more power though, considering it's a 5.0 HO. It SHOULD have around 225 or 230 horses at the rear wheels...so somewhere over 250 at the fly. I like the gauges...but Ford didnt think when they painted the dashes on. They're in mathematically-nonsensical increments...so in order to know the engine temperature, for example, you need to pull out a calculator because they only marked the top and bottom. Interior is pretty good. Some of it's on the chinsy side but I think it's actually got better quality interior pieces than my Camaro did, despite what everyone else says. The motor....well....it's got 147,000 miles and leaks a little oil when I run it hard, but it burns nothing and hauls nuts, even with one cylinder down on compression. It's a beast for sure. Unfortunately, my electric fan died today and the car damn near overheated as I parked it and popped the hood. Gushed the fluid out of the overflow.. I got lucky considering I had no fan, and I have no heater core so turning the heater on in the car didn't do anything. I popped the top, filled it with water, and drove it home speeding and thanking the powers that be that I caught almost every green light. But besides that, everything's just peachy! Just looking for a set of heads now too (besides a manual fan, clutch pack, and shroud)...I think my compression loss is cause my valves on the Cylinder 8 are toasted.
