is this my starter?

lately my car hasnt been firing right up and may need a second try. well yesterday i drove it to school. it started on the second try. when i came out after it had been sitting for about 6 hours i use my keyless entry thus indicating that my battery was not the reason for this. all of my electronics are working. when i turn the key to the acc position i can heard my fuel pump priming...and then i go to turn the key and NOTHING.

not a **** thing happened other than my temp gauge goes up when the key is turned and goes down when i stop

what could this be?

It can one of two things. I could be your starter or your VATS. When was the last time you did the starter? It could be the problem.

If its the VATS, the following will happen:

VATS is that black resister that sits in your key. It needs to touch two wires inside the ignition cylinder in order for the car to start.

Try this. Insert your key and turn it to the on position. Now look and see if the "SECURTIY" light is on or off, it's is located off to the right side. I "believe" if it IS working, then the securtiy WILL come on, and the car will start.

If it is NOT working, the security light will NOT come on. If the security light is NOT on, then your car isn't seeing the resistor in the key and thinks you are trying to steal the car and won't start.

HOWEVER, I could have this BACKWARDS. I sold my Firebird two months ago. Someone who still has the car has to confirm this.

FIX: If your lucky, it can be as easy as replacing your key for 25.00. However, when it happened to me....and it did at around 114,000 miles, a mechanic had to re-solder the two wires inside the ignition coil. One of them had come loose.

this almost sounds like what happened with my GP. All electrical would work, but nothing when the key went into start. Turned out the starter was fried (warranties are great ) .

WIll it jump start? mine did it once, then finally died at the house.

Here's the link to my ORIGINAL post when I had the problem. It should answer most of you questions.

Right.. and if it ISN'T your VATS, then it could be:

Starter
Starter Solenoid
Park/Neutral Saftey Switch (Auto)
Clutch Saftey Switch (Manual)
Cut/Shorted Lead to Starter Solenoid
Cut/Shorted Lead(s) to Saftey Switch
Corroded battery terminal

i never actually thought that my key would be the reason...as soon as i get home im gonna try to start it up with my spare set. even though i know that its going to end up costing some cash just because of my bad luck.

i have an exhaust leak that i was actually going to get fixed the day that my car wouldnt start...

if its just my key then ill be able to drop my car off today after school
