Help with distributor

I'm tearing my engine apart right now and the distributor won't come out. I can pull it up about 2 maybe 2.5 inches, but then it seems to get stuck on the gear. Am I missing something, or is it just being stubborn.

On the rebuilding of the distributor, I've read Karl's article and a picture would REALLY help, so if somebody could give me a picture and break down the steps with reference to the picture it would be very much appreciated. Thanks guys for all the help.

Oh yeah... and where can I get that V8 distributor gasket

make sure the hold down clamp is completely out of the way when you go to remove it. I've had that problem before as well, but a couple taps with a rubber mallet usually corrects it . Try giving the rotor a little counterclockwise "twist" as you pull it out.
the gasket can be purchased at any auto parts store.

the hold down clamp is in a bag in a box right now...so thats not it

I'll try giving it a twist, it just seems like the gear is bigger than the hole...never happened with my other engine...

I can 100% promise ya
that distributor will come out!
Pics......
I can show finished items.
BUT pretty much what ya want to do is as what I wrote.
It really is a pretty idiot proof mission.
That's coming from the idiot that wrote that thread!

SBC Distb gaskets.
PHONE to a parts store & ask if they have a Small Block Chevy distributor gasket to sell ya.
What engine they'll ask?
Give them a 1967 350cid Camaro!
Also include a new rubber "O" ring as back up on the distributor shaft.
These items should set ya back about $2-$3
THE ONLY ITEM LEFT OUT OF THE THREAD IS replace the magnetic pick up, that is ontop of the distributor.
The rest of the article is correct as I wrote it.
MAKE SURE the engine is at Top Dead Center when ya are removing the distributor.
I'd say check all wiring to be loose, but I am sure ya have done that detail. Really if the distributor is off the manifold base, it will be able to be removed from the engine!
Honest!

If you have a 2.8, the plug for the cold start injector might be blocking the distributor- although, it usually prevents you from lifting the distributor up at ALL, and you got yours to move a few inches.

This is the mysterious 7th injector, right? Used to richen up the mix for a cold engine, the "high-tech" version of a carburetor choke, right?

Yep; v8 tpi's with maf got 'em too. It's controlled by a cold start switch, front of intake manifold near the CTS. It's not computer controlled, either; it's a "closed system". Power (via that 3 amp crank fuse) to cold start switch to cold start injector to ground; nothing else. Er; at least, nothing else for the 2.8's. Not sure about the TPI v8's, but it's the V6 forum, so who cares?

Hmmmm... I feel a mod coming on...

Has anyone tried manual control over the injector at WOT? Or is this injector normally dumping in fuel during power enrichment mode?

Sounds like something fun to try after I compose myself after getting that C&N burnout ticket...

From that long message about dennine2's car, in https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...=1#post1297466

The sensors "in front off to the left of the throttle body on the intake" are the cold start switch (purple & tan wires) and the engine's CTS (coolant temp switch, yellow & black wires). If you're tracking a fan problem, dont' forget to check out the fan relay. If that's melted, the computer and/or the fan switch won't be able to kick the fan on. Don't forget about the fuseable links that run the fan, either; should be off the junction block on the passenger side of the radiator. The relay runs off a fuse in the fuse box.

At least it's a start...

Those words between apostrophes were dennine2's (or her husband's) words, not mine. You can read the thread if you want proof!

It's all good... At least I have the wiring now...

Where can I find a decent, complete wiring diagram for my car? I have a huge resource for my Grand Prix's, but nothing comperable for the Bird... Chilton's and Alldata CD just don't cut it...

http://www.helminc.com ; the GM service manual. Mine was $60 back in '94, I think they've gone up since then.

Most times less at swap meets.
I picked up mine for $40
YET, it was a long search (many swap meets) before I scored this manual.
Very valuable.
PS Motor makes wiring diagram manuals, also.
I have that one also.

YET neither schematic is as easy to read as the wiring diagrams on my old 74 Corvette or the 67 & 68 Camaros

EBAY!
YET
This manual is rather thick & heavy so don't choke too much on their shipping fee.
This is a one vehicle manual, also, not combined as is my older Chevy (Corvette, Nova, Camaro, Monte Carlo, etc shop manual) Helms manuals.
PS NEVER HURTS to visit a local dealership, just incase someone wants to unload their older shop manuals for cheaper.
The Time Magazine sized Chilton manuals are great alternatives
