rpms take forever to come down

anytime i have the clutch in or have the car in neutral, the idle jumps up to 2000rpms. it takes anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds to come down to idle speed. it sits at around 2000 and then slowly drops. i replaced the IAC valve already. any thoughts on this?

Check your vacuum hoses to see if any are lose or cracked.
Vacuum leaks tend to cause high idles.

Check your idle speed stop on the throttle body. Let the car idle in neutral, warmed up, and back that stop out. That should help you!

it eventually gets to the idle speed, but it takes forever to do it. thats what the problem is.

Check the throttle linkage, and the throttle body butterfly mechanism for any binding or stickiness near the idle position. Open the throttle body and look inside to see if it's gummy right where the butterfly closes the entrance to the plenum. Another thing to check is the linkage to the cruise control if so equipped. Set the brake and observe the throttle linkage while this is happening. There could be something funky going on with the CC actuator causing it to create return resisitance on the throttle arm. Watch the throttle linkage at the throttle body as well as the CC actuator down by the driver's side headlight bucket. That should cover the mechanical part of it. Next step electrical and I'll probably be scratching my head too.

Happy hunting

i kinda had the same problem, i had a mechanic look at it and they replaced the tps, and put a throttle return spring on...

sometimes it surges a little but not nearly like it did before.

before everytime i went to shift gears my engine would kinda rev, i hated how it wanted to burn my clutch

well its all fixed now, good luck

with the engine running, pop the throttle open and hold it, then close the throttle by hand and see how long it takes to get down. If it goes down quickly like it should, then the return spring is probably weak. Mine was like this so I went down to pep boys and bought a carb return spring and installed it on my car, problem fixed.

Maybe I was unclear... see, the throttle stop physically stops the throttle blade. If the blade is stopped too early, then it's up to the IAC to go from open, to close until the rpms come down. That could be causing it. close the throttle blade, and force the IAC to take up more of the idle load.
