What parts needed for TC swap

Just want to clarify the parts I should order before changing the timing chain this week:

1. Do you guys recommend changing the tensioner when doing the timing chain?

2. Is the gasket for the timing cover something that can be ordered or is that an RTV thing?

3. What about the surface of the oilpan where the TC cover touches?

4. Is it necessary to change the sleeve on the harmonic balancer?

Anything else you would suggest??

Oh, and is it necessary to loosen the oil pan bolts to get the cover off?

Thanks.

1. Not really needed, its not a "tensioner" like you think.
2. You can order a timing chain cover kit, that comes with that gasket, and waterpump, and mine came with your question #4 gasket.
3. IF you carfully remove cover, you can just put some silicone back between the two.
4. See #2

Loosen oil pan bolts, depends on what year. Some TC covers do have studs that go thru the front of the oil pan. Otherwise, normally you dont have to mess with oil pan.

cool, thanks a lot Dale, I appreciate it. I made a call to a parts store today and apparently the TC cover gasket kit you mentioned comes in 2 versions (one with and one without the sleave and seal for the balancer - different prices of course). Do you recommend getting the one with the balancer stuff?

So what is that gizmo between the two gears do then. Is it more of a guide to stop the chain from flopping around? (I am used to doing timing belts with a tensioner pulley so this is new to me).

thanks.
