A/C delete

I have an 88 Camaro with a 2.8 and would like to remove my A/C. I have read that this can save up to 35 pounds. What all can I take off my car to remove all of this weight? If anybody knows the part number of the A/C delete pulley for my car I would greatly appreciate it.

If you click on and do a search for "air conditioning remove condensor" by "TomP" in the "V6 Forum", you'll find my messages on how to yank the a/c without opening a single fitting. If your a/c has no freon left and is depressurized, you can just unbolt the pipes.

I don't believe that you need an a/c delete pulley. I think that GM just routed the belt differently on a non-a/c car.

The power steering bracket needs to be replaced too.

I found out you can't simply remove the compressor, and buy a belt for a non-a/c car. you can get it on but in a few hours your tensioner will fly off. the bracket will look the same but it's slightly different and has a different part number stamped into it.

Couple of big adjustable wrenches is about all you need special. Take it apart right and you can save it for later or sale. I found the greatest bennfit from the removal of the AC radiator. The cooling power doubles on the 6 with an air dam. My fan never comes on unless I sit for 3-4mins in traffic. Might as well call my car fanless as its only used 4-5 times a year.

You don't need a different PS bracket. Just a shorter bolt to hold it to the head. Sellers on eBay sell the AC delete pulley all the time, and it is probably needed unless you want to keep your compressor.

I have to find that piece of paper... hopefully it's in the toolbox... I had scribbled down the belt routing of a non-ac 87-up f-body with a v6 in it.

I have it on my belt routing sticker... the belt goes directly to the power steering from the tensioner on my 87 with no A/C.

Yea some of them are not easy.

My 86 was real easy, the AC had its own V belt that I just removed and the smog pump was easy to remove as only the stick had a smog pump so I just got an 86 auto belt.
