stupid car, studers n surges

86 2.8lmpfi

i had a prob with the camaro earlier, it wouldnt start when warm somtimes, i went and picked up a new ignition moduel, i hadn't instaled it and was planing to the next week on my day off, a few days later my car started having idle problems, it would idle really fast, as the days passed it kept up the idle prob and during daily driving it was starting to run ruffer, now its almost too ruff to drive, funny thing is somtimes while driving it there will be good piriods of time were it runs pretty good. before these problems the car ran awsome, it was great. so my day off came (today) and i put in new plugs and the new ignition mod, the car still runs ****y, i hope the ignition mod fixed the prob with starting it but i dunno, what does this sound like??? when idoling it surges in rpm and studers. im stuck, i was thinking mabe vacume leak, but would that make it run ruff or just raise the rpm??? how can i check fer vacume leaks??

damn, lots of idle problems going around. My problem was a loose reluctor pick up. I also have to set the idle speed. You may need to redo those things also. Any codes? For vacuum leaks, take a spray bottle w/water in it. Start spraying around the vacuum lines. If the engine sstutters more than it already is, the leak is in that general area.

On another engine I was working on, I had such a bad vac leak in the intake that the thing idled at 1300rpm's constantly and rain really rich due to the leak. Searched and searched for the leak and replaced a bunch of hoses, finally decided to replace the intake gasket on the old thing. Sure enough, two of the bolts for the side mounted intake had snapped off, and thus allowing air to leak in really bad at those two points.

Just a thought, but yes a really bad leak can cause a surge (raise I think you mean *shrug*) in idle.
