VIbration issue...please help
VIbration issue...please help
ok I just finished a clutch job and some other things and I just took it out for a spin and everthing is sweet now (shifting etc) exept for that there appears to be a bit of vibration when revving. Nothing extreme but unless I am imagining things, there is a little (mind you I haven't driven it in a number of weeks but I swear there is some).
Now I did get the flywheel machined and all the places I called told me that you don't have to re-balance it, so it wasn't done.
By the way it is an 85 FB 2.8
So:
1. Is a "little" vibration ok? Will it cause any harm? Loosen things over time?
2. When putting on a new pressure plate, does it matter which way it goes on or can it go on any way?
3. There were no dowel pins on this pressure plate, is that normal??
4. Could something have been disturbed when hammering the pilot bushing into the crank??
5. Would it be really noticable if 1 cylinder were not firing or just a small vibration?? Just curious cuz I accidentally spilt a lot oil on 2 plub boots when filling the engine.
any help would be greatly appreciated as I am a little concerned.
thanks,
eddie

it does matter which way the pressure plate goes on, but it's been so long since I had to work on one, I forget which faces what. might even be on the center ring. match it up w/how the old one was taken off

There's always a chance that you chipped the pilot bushing when putting the trans back on.
Check the universal joints on your driveshaft. There should be almost no play (not including play from the transmission).
I did my clutch 3 years ago and I had no vibration problem. I had the flywheel machined but no balancing was done.
I don't recall there being a wrong way to put the pressure plate on, but I marked mine so I knew which way the old one came off. There's nothing to counterbalance the pressure plate, so it shouldn't matter which way it goes on.
Give it a little time though. I remember when I first did the clutch, it would squeak noticeably in neutral. This went away after 500 miles or so.

I read about marking the pressure plate in the Haynes manual but assumed that meant if you were re-using the same one
(so I didn't pay attention to which way it came off). They don't appear to have different features either if you know what i mean (not that I noticed anyway). The features just repeat themselves so that there is no distinguishing part that you could line up with something.
Can anyone else shed some light on this???

u-joints are definitely tight. I just looked at the old pressure plate today and noticed some metal **** stuck in one of the holes around the edge of the plate (not in relation to the 3 springs). Could this be a small weight. Does anyone else have this?? Man I wish I had a digital cam!
