EGR removal question.

Will removing the EGR/setup on a '92 3.1 camaro cause any problems with the ECM (i.e. SES light/setting a code). I'm getting ready to help a friend put headers on his car and make new exhaust for it soon. I wasn't positive if there were any adverse effects from ditching the EGR setup or, will it need to be readapted to the new exhaust ? Any info would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, it will throw codes.
Yes, it will need to be adapted. unless you want to lose timing cause you have to compensate for higher combustion temps.

Higher combustion temps, and Iron heads, make a good recipe for DETONATION.

no, i have 91 3.1 with hooker super comps on it. i have the stock ecm in it. i OCCASIONALLY get the SES but not real often. and, it doesn't run any different with the light on. And, it goes off next time you start it. the plug from my egr is just hangin next to the coil. if you want pics or anymore info, let me know. i've been running this setup for a few months now too, about 5,000 miles.

I ventured into the no EGR zone and its bestto keep it or find a wayto fool the computer so it still make timing adjustements. I think around town you do not notice it as much as on the e-way. I played back n fourth with it and found its is a tad better with it hooked up.

Now I have removed my cat, air pump and run a fresh air pvc.
[PVC system vents into open air and not my intake.]

Hey guys, I appreciate the information. If this were my car, I wouldn't be to concered but, since it's not, I'd rather do it correct.
I know that the EGR, while it's a 50/50 debate, does help in it's own way which is usually for the better (lower combustion temps). My bud is indifferent weather it's there or not.
The main thing I wasn't sure about was weather or not the ECM reads the temp of the EGR or not. The ECM diagram I have is somewhat (completely) useless for a v6 and didn't show the EGR as having a sensor like my TPI or TBI.
If the ECM does monitor temp via a sensor similar to a TBI/TPI, do you think it be possible to drill and tap a spot on the header flange (these things are thick) and screw the sensor to there so the ECM is seeing actual exhaust temp as if it were on the EGR ?
If that's a moronic idea, I will just go ahead and adapt the EGR to the new exhaust somehow.
Again, thanks for help guys

No. The only thing the computer reads is the amount of vacuum that is flowing in the system. The more vacuum, the computer begins to report an error, or something like that, I am not really sure, or it could be less vacuum. Anyways, when you unhook the EGR it causes a drop in the manifold vacuum since the manifold is now taking in the fresh air, and the car may stall out if you are not careful. If you do remove the EGR valve, be sure to put a cut-off golf tee or something in the end of the hose to keep your engine vacuum up and your computer happy.

i have the hooker super comp headers on my 87 firebird, with the 2030 crane cam, and it has a rough idle up and down on the tach
so i have opted to reinstall it and send the headers back to jet hot to be coated......... no egr bad for performance it also has detonation at full thottle, i have spent 5-6,000 dollars on my set up, it seems like i lost performance from not having my egr,
when i had a bad egr, it ran the same way no power, rough idle,
ect,,,, with a new one it seems like i just installed nitrous!
big deal with it....
